Disclaimer: Characters don't belong to me, laaaa.
Kate pushes the door open with her shoulder, walking in backwards with a full box in her arms.
"I'm going to load these and I'll be right back. Don't you even think about trying to get any of those others," she says, teasing and serious as she turns around.
The surprise of stepping into Milliways instead of out onto June Pardy's front porch is nothing compared to the shock of bowling over one of the bar's patrons.
She drops the box and its contents of books spills out, landing at the booted feet of the young man she just ran into.
"Oh my God, I'm sorry-- "
Kate stoops quickly, and so does the boy.
"It's okay, Ms. Warner."
"William. Are you okay?" Kate scrambles to put the books back in the box, and William nods.
"Yes, ma'am. You alright?"
He helps her and she nods.
"Fine. Just need to pay more attention to my surroundings."
"The bar can surprise you, Ms. Warner," William says, reaching out to lift the box.
Kate takes the task away from him by lifting it herself.
Wry, "Kate. Thank you for the help. I'm sorry for running you over there."
William ducks his head at the correction, and spots another book on the floor. Picking it up, he looks it over.
"They're Bill's," Kate explains, moving to the side out of the entryway, and setting the box down on a table. "I'm helping his mom clean out her attic."
"Oh?" William flips the pages of the old, yellowed paperback in his hands.
Kate watches his interest in the book and smiles.
"Find one you like?"
"I think I know this book," William replies, distracted.
His expression lights when he reaches the back cover.
"I do. Look."
Kate leans forward curiously, and William shows her what he's found.
On one corner are the well-written initials 'W.E.', and just below that is the carefully scrawled name 'B-I-L-L.
“I gave it to 'im.”
Kate's eyes widen in amazement.
“Wow.”
“I can't believe he kept it.” William smiles and pulls the book back to look it over some more.
“Yeah, he-- “
It's then that the front door opens again, and Bill comes striding in.
“Freeze. Hold it, right there.”
He points a finger at Kate, expression stern.
“Bill-- “
“I know you both think you're slick, but I ain't lettin' you get away with it.”
Kate glances at William, whose eyes are wide, then looks back at Bill.
“Sweetheart-- “
Bill shakes his head and walks past her to grab the box.
“You tell my mom the attic is no place for a craft room, an' if she wants one so bad I'll build her one.”
“Your mom-- “
He hefts the box and gives Kate a Look.
“An' tell her she can't just be gettin' rid of my stuff.”
“But-- “
Eyes still on Kate, Bill plucks the dime novel from William's hands, and sets it on top of the other books.
“I still might wanna read these someday.”
With a firm nod, Bill heads back out, leaving a perplexed William, and a bemused Kate behind.
“Didn't mean t'make him mad,” William says after the door closes.
“He's not mad,” Kate chuckles. “To borrow a phrase from his mom, 'he's particular about his old junk.'.”
Leaning over, she gives William a smirk.
“What he doesn't realize is, we weren't throwing it out.”
“You weren't?” William looks up at her.
“Nope. We were just moving it all into storage. His mom would like the extra space, but she knows how much all of that old stuff means to Bill.”
William smiles, looking back at the door.
“I'll bet when he finds out he's gonna feel like a-- “
William stops, eyes darting to Kate, and he smiles in nervousness.
“I mean-- “
“Oh, we'll be getting an apology, that's for sure,” Kate laughs.
She pats William's shoulder, and heads for the door.
“Take care, William. I'll see you later.”
“You too, Ms. Warner.”
“Kate,” she reminds him with a wave before stepping back out after Bill.
