I played piano at church last Sunday, the first time since I got axed from band leadership last year. Had a great time, and played the weirdest church piano I've ever played. I used quite a few left-hand jazz voicings, which I've been practicing at home, and put in some half-chord/half-tone-cluster things in My Redeemer Lives (when they hit the drum solo, I started whacking some weird bits on the piano). The funniest bit was using the guitar riff from Guerilla Radio as an octaved Latin intro to My Redeemer Lives (gorilla piano indeed). I also tried echoing the vocals from There Is A Redeemer as a means of improvisation. I was pleased with the results, as it became much less appregiated than usual.
All in all, an adventurous excursion. I don't think I nailed the meaning of the songs, but I wasn't running roughshod over them either.
Feedback: Nathanael said he thinks I'm a really good musician. It was nice to hear that from him. I'm pretty sure the others enjoyed it too.
