Daniel Moulton came over to dinner last night. It was good to see him, and we talked about art/creativity as we always do. I mentioned I had a new song, and he asked how long I'd been working on it. About two years was the answer. Typical.
This linked to my thinking earlier in the day about Bono from U2. On the "How To Dismantle..." bonus disc doco he says that his lyrics, once he knows what they're about, come to him all at once. He writes it down sequentially.
I was thinking that maybe I am a bit like this, it just takes forever for the ideas to form in my head. I doubt spend hours agonising over word choice, I just sing along and get the vibe. Sometimes I sing something and it's heading in the right direction, but more and more I seem to be getting the bulk of the lyrics out in one session, with all the earlier attempts completely thrown away.
Alison is really helping me with my lyrical style, just telling me what works.
