author-nim, while i appreciate the efforts to make this an enjoyable fic for your recipient and the rest of the merry-goers here at baekfest, i would also like to point out something.
a sombrero, while certainly bigger than standard western culture hats, is not something you should classify as a "funny hat". especially if you're going to also don on a stick-on moustache to accompany the look; this is not a costume, and it is not a joke. this is both cultural appropriation of a Mexican symbol and racist because you're utilizing a stereotypical image of what Mexican culture has become associated with for some funny lines.
"Chanyeol rummages around beneath his desk for a moment. He emerges with something enormous and yellow and dumps it in front of Baekhyun.
Baekhyun looks at the hat, and then back at Chanyeol.
“A sombrero..?”
“Yeah,” Chanyeol says, grinning widely. He tosses something black and fluffy next to the sombrero. “I got you a stick-on moustache as well.”
“Please tell me you haven't got a poncho stashed away somewhere…”
“No, I didn't think of that, actually,” Chanyeol admits, “dammit, that would have been hilarious..”"
adding a poncho to this ensemble is not funny; it's offensive and racist. it's nice that you can have such throwaway lines and forget about it, but these kinds of microaggressions are upsetting and offensive to pocs.
mods, this is the second time i have to come in here and point this kind of casual racism out. this is disappointing.
Once again I apologise for the racism and I thank you for pointing it out. My sole purpose for writing (other than to procrastinate) is to make people smile, and knowing I might have made someone upset with something I wrote is an awful feeling and I'm sorry
