Notes: I haven’t seen all of season two yet, so hopefully I’m not contradicting anything in canon with this.

It was dark where Sokka lay hidden under piles of fur and a half collapsed tent. He couldn’t see anything. He could feel his sister next to him, her small body pressing against his side. She was shaking and Sokka shifted to put his arm around her because she needed the comfort, certainly not because he was as terrified as she.

Outside it was light, the noon sun reflecting off the snow even as the fire of their attackers consumed it. His mom and his dad were out there, fighting to protect their village. Sokka wished he was out there too, he was a warrior (well almost) and it was his duty. But his mother had told him to stay with his sister, stay hidden. So Sokka stayed in the dark, one arm around his sister, the other holding a thick piece of firewood (he wasn’t old enough to have his own club yet).

Sokka wished he could fight and protect them all, but mostly he wished his mother and father were here with them in the dark.

It was safe in the darkness.
