Big. Fat. Nay.

I agree with you, every smidgen of character development we've seen in this volume so far has been thrown aside as the status quo is returned. Jack suddenly leaps into leadership again, after over a year of being pathetic. And Angie's all over him again? Since when?! I couldn't believe that Jack ordered Apollo just get thrown at Gamorra and no one said "Hey, maybe that's not a terribly nice idea." It's not like they couldn't have taken down Gamorra without infected!Apollo. D:

Habib as the Green Man is just... odd. I know he's Earth's shaman but couldn't they have used middle eastern mythology to reflect Habib's background?

Oh good, it wasn't just me then. I was trying to work out why I disliked this 'repowering' when I really liked last issue's defeat of Lorenzo. I think for me the answer is that (rant hat on):

(1) Lorenzo as written by DnA was a fantastic camp villain, whereas Kaizen is just rubbish. The most interesting thing about him was Cybernary, and I was hoping she was the wildcard, making a secret deal with the Authority behind his back or being co-opted. But no, turns out she was just plot fodder, and everything that made her interesting was glibly removed by Angie.

(2) Swift and Angie in #15 were humane and heroic while they were kicking ass (Angie trying talking with the Golden rather than just shooting, Swift being pathfinder and saving the child), where here everyone takes their cue from the re-Millarised Jack, and is obnoxious like it's 2001. I hate the way Jack gets to be team leader automatically, without a word of "we'll talk later" from Swift or Angie ( ... )

Lorenzo doesn't strike me as a villain. Sure, he's self-interested and ruthless but everything he does has a reason, usually to further his own interests. Kaizen is a rubbish villain because... being a villain is his only motivation. He admits he does what he does because it's fun. In that way he was a great starter bad-guy in the first Authority arc because you didn't need a lot of back story and Ellis could get straight to the explosions and banter. But ten years later Kaizen's getting a bit old hat ( ... )
