Newbie seeking guidance..

I've had a quick snoop around this wonderful comm. and I've seen a couple "Hi I'm new!" posts around, so I hope that no one objects to this. If I have done anything wrong I do apologise, but I come to you today looking for advice!
I'm really, really, STUPIDLY new to the world of The Authority - a friend of mine posted some scans to his journal a couple months ago, and then I picked up the KEV and MORE KEV volumes from my local comic store (which was the ONLY Authority stuff they have - disappointing.) but so far that is it.
I have completely fallen in love with Apollo & Midnighter and am desperate to read more, but I just don't know where to start!
Is it worth going all the way back to the start and reading right from issue 1? Is there anything.. not-so-good.. that I ought not to bother with? What are your personal favourite issues and where's the best place to buy from?
Where would you advise a complete beginner to start? It's all mind-boggling! @_@
