What's your favorite guilty indulgence?

Wax candles. I collect them. Not aromatherapy candles, but those long and slightly awkward ones they sell at bad tourist traps. The round ones with the double wick in the middle, cotton that twines around itself as the flame catches, and then flares up again. The flickering light isn't peaceful, it isn't serene, and it doesn't bring inner peace, nor does it bring a horrible smell to my house.

But the way the colors glow from the fire, the way the wax bubbles and beads, there's a special beauty in that. Take a standard white candle, light it, and wait for a moment before making walls out of the softening wax. The candle will last more than twice as long that way. Most people don't know that.

And some of the candles don't get burned. They sit on my shelves and on my dresser, and in the kitchen, and some of them have been used during power outages. But mostly I keep them just to look at them, lit or unlit. It's a waste of space, it's a waste of money, but it's something I allow myself because I can't imagine being parted with my collection.

There's something eternal about fire.
