468 How do you cope when your internet connection* goes down?

Dec 31, 2012 23:55

P’raps I should cut this post for shame,
The Internet here is to blame,
I had a merry song to sing,
Happy New Year and everything.
And could I post it? I could not.
The laptop failed and took the lot!

I’ve tried for hours, the best I can.
The ISP, and multi-dimensional LAN
Took my first song and all that followed,
(I knew it sucked - alas, it swallowed.)

Your world and mine is but a stage,
But I react with sorrow, rage,
And, I feel shame to say, with fear
I like the roles I danced through here.
The old year flies with hasty wing,
Time wastes with every note I sing

I try to greet the change with rhyme,
But soon the clocks will start to chime
We’ll raise our glasses, lift our hearts
And drink toasts as the New Year starts.
(And I’ll be seeking for a rhyme
And hoping I can post this time.

The Minion here is feeling terror
In case we should get “varnish error”
Now, to the Journal, press the key
And get the thing on-line for me!

The Operative wasn’t technically minded, but sometimes he wondered if the dimensional portals and this internet thing were somehow connected. He felt that they had too much in common for it to be a coincidence.

Both systems stretched between more access points than he could imagine, maybe more than a mathematician could imagine. (He’d heard a mathematician sing about quantum once and it’d given him the impression that the universe was like a ball of wool that had been thoroughly kittened.)

Both systems had misroutes, scrambles, days when the bases you were trying to reach didn’t seem to be there, trips when you couldn’t get what you wanted whatever you tried and trips when you got a damn site more than you’d bargained for!

Both systems seemed to fail at every opportunity, usually in the way that would do most damage - and both seemed to have a malign sense of humour, as if, somewhere, there was a brain that knew that they couldn’t be more trouble than they were worth.

He couldn’t do without either of them, he knew that, but when the Internet failed again and again when he was trying to post to a deadline he knew the whole system was possessed - or maybe it was working for the D’Hoffryn.
