A Week in Review

Happy 4th of July, everyone! Things have been good for me today and this past week. Here's a recap:

A week ago (Wednesday), I won tickets to see a sneak preview of a movie and invited my friend from gaming, Jason, along with me. It was at the Esquire. The movie was Introducing the Dwights AKA Clubland. It's an Australian heartfelt dramady about a guy dealing with his "entertaining" family, his comedienne mother and country-singing father. He meets a nice girl and is torn between the obligations of his family (he has a brother with mental disabilities) and the love of this girl. It was an entertaining movie with a nice message: enjoy the life you have and don't regret the past. Afterwards, Jason and I had dinner on Ludlow and had a good time. It was a grand evening.

On Saturday, Jim and I went to dinner at Vinyl (a little too high class for my taste, but decent food) before heading to see Radiant Baby, a new musical being put on by New Stage Collective. It is a musical about New York graffiti artist Keith Haring. This high energy, large cast show was an innovative showing that displayed his life and passion for art. There were some great performances, especially by Adam Standley playing the title role. However, there were several problems including sound issues and often oversinging of songs. The first act was good, but the second act just got too befuddled and lost its edge. I liked the story and the 80s/90s music/costumes and there were some excellent moments with lighting, staging, and choreography. It was a good effort, but fell a little short of expectations.

Sunday was gaming and had a great time with that.

Tuesday evening, Jim picked me up late (he had a show in Richmond, KY) and we made our way to the the grand opening of The Below Zero Lounge. It's a martini/cocktail bar and lounge. The atmosphere was nice and it was pretty busy, even after midnight. It's a great space and with Nigel (formerly of Universal Grille) and his partner JC, at the reigns, it's going to be an awesome space. The drinks are a little pricey, though. But, there are lots of things that are being planned to be implemented, so here's hoping it all works out.

For the 4th, Jim and I just spent the day together. We had a visitor (hehehe) and then went to On Broadway for a couple of drinks. There was supposed to be a cookout, but when we got there, there wasn't anything out yet. About an hour later, they had some hot dogs out, but that's it. So, a little perturbed, we went to IHOP and had dinner. It was filling and made for a good time.

I called my mom today as well. It's her birthday. There are still some loose ends regarding my sister's passing. My mom got a few of the medical bills from the hospital. Apparently, there are some insurance issues. Also, since my sister was 24 before she passed, she was an adult. Therefore, any information (like the autospy results) may not be disclosed to my mother. And, to add insult to injury, my mom is thinking about suing the doctor that was taking care of my sister's ingrown toenail (a possible source of the infection that killed her). According to my mom, they were just giving my sister antibiotic after antibiotic to fight the infection in her toe, never really determining exactly which one it was (a nurse friend of the family says they should have done a culture). It makes me a little mad and of course upset to think that something as little as an ingrown toenail may have caused her death, but the evidence so far seems to point in that direction. Hopefully, we'll hear more about it soon.
