So today I got up at 5:15am and went to the Revlon Run/Walk for Women at Exposition Park and Memorial Colosseum. It was a HUGE event. 60,000 participants: way more than expected. I thought it was cool how many cancer survivors were there with their families and friends supporting them. It was also scary how many people (myself included) had a sign with the name of someone close on their back who has or has had cancer. It really does affect everyone and some of the signs and stories were heartbreaking. I'm really glad I did it for the cause.
I was definitely bothered by all the corporate grandstanding though. All of the corporate sponsors seemed to be promoting themselves rather than the cause. The participant gift bags mostly had coupons. So it was like, look at us, we're do-gooders, come spend more money with us. I definitely understand why some survivors do not support this walk. Also, there were a few celebrities there as speakers and performers, again, promoting themselves and, I suspect, getting paid. Why weren't they out there walking with the rest of us? I think people with that sort of influence should put it to good use.
All things considered, I would do it again. The good outweighs the bad, at least for me. Then I took a good long nap and I'm going to go see a movie tonight. Yay!
