I hate that song.
But that's not the problem for the evening. The issue is this: what on earth are you supposed to say when you get ashes on Ash Wednesday? This would be Ash Wednesday #19 for me, but, as it only comes around once a year, I never remember what to say. In fact, in years past, I remember Mom standing next to me and whispering in my ear, "When you go up, remember to say ________."
Now if only I could remember what she said.
I feel rather like a bad Catholic... except that no one else is absolutely sure what to say, either. So the question stands: what do you say? Current suggestions:
- Amen.
- Nothing.
- Thank you, sir; may I have another?
