So I managed to sneak out of the house tonight and creep into the threates where I was treated to Stranger Than Fiction. And I say treated in all seriousness. This movie was actually quite good.
High praise coming from me
As I am sure you know, the movie stars Will Ferrell as the bland IRS agent Harold Crick. Harold Crick leads an extremely structured lifestyle based entirely in numbers. He counts everything and repeats all the same things everyday in exactly all the same ways.
Except, as these things go, one day things are a little different. They start out when he starts hearing a Britsh woman's voice narrating his every action and thought. Obviously this upsets his neatly organized life quite a bit. However, the entire day is frought with changes and unexpectations .
When all is said and done this movie ended up being one of the most interesting romances I've ever seen. The movie is funny; with witty dialogue, monologue and clever timing the refined movie-goer will find themself with quite a bit to laugh at. However, just because Will Ferrell is in this movie does not mean it's a "laugh riot." He actually does a pretty good job in this role and I would not be him surprised to see him more serious roles in the future.
I say this because about half-way through the movie a bunch of kids in the audience got up and left one after another. I don't know if it was because it was past their bedtimes or because the movie had become deep and meaningful and they had come to see Will Ferrell be funny.
It's about the redeeming qualities of love, the unexpected, the futility of life and the beauty of second chances.
I recommend this movie if you have elevated tastes and understand the finer points of storytelling.
