Rose of Versailles (or whatever the official english/american title may be; the series is simply called Lady Oscar in most european countries as far as I know) is a series set during and befor the French Revolution. The main character is Oscar, a woman who was brought up as a man by her father who wanted a son. She becomes the bodyguard of the young Marie Antoinette.
I chose Alex Kingston for the role because a. She's got the hair and b. she's the right actress to portray a strong woman like Oscar.
This series is the only reason I didn't flunk French History in school.

Princess Sarah is the World Masterpiece Theatre adaption of the book A Little Princess, which I'm sure you've heard of. It follows the story of the book pretty closely and is mighty depressing for a children's series. (I remember crying for hours when I was nine because her father died and everyone was so mean to her. Really, hours.)Sarah is the daughter of a rich business man who loses all his money and dies of Malaria, and who is then kept asa worker in the posh private school she attended when she can't pay her bills.
Okay, look. I didn't plan to cast Selena Gomez in this role, but she's pretty much the only young actress I could think of that fit the visual criteria. And her role in Another Cinderella Story is close enough that it might work. Who knows, eh?
Both series are definitely worth a watch!
