She was someone I read obsessively. If she wrote it, I read it. We chatted a bit online, ex-husbands, life and poetry (although i was always shy and embarrassed when she talked about mine) offered each other the kind of friendship and support people who have never met can. I'd always planned to go to Nationals, for the fun and just so i could meet her.
Her presence was pure light, a warm, enveloping brilliance that just loved you back no matter what. Her sharp wit cut through the bullshit to the essential truth -- the thing YOU MUST KNOW. Even when, a few short months ago, she was given her devastating diagnosis she handled it with grace and courage and wit. She did not shy away, she did not stop short of telling it and reveling in the ability to tell and in the act of sharing. She was a fiery-haired, poet, embodying all that might or should or could mean.
I'm so thankful for what she shared with me, for her words and humor. I hope I gave a little bit back. Gabrielle, Gabby, thank you. I'll miss you. Thank you.
bunny up, girl.
