or, why i don't see the peter/olivia pairing
spoilers for fringe seasons 1 and 2 (yes, i mean THE ENTIRE SERIES so far)
spoilers may be present in the comments!
1) Peter & Olivia just don't have (the romantic sort of) chemistry.
I like Peter, and I like Olivia. I like Walter, too. I like the three of them together as a family (and Astrid can come along for the heck of it). I think they make a great family unit. But Peter and Olivia as a couple? I just don't see it. There have been moments where they've definitely had some sort of romantic connection (such as the teasing phone call at the beginning of 02x15, I think - a scene I really liked), but those moments are few and far in between. Overall, I don't think they have the right onscreen chemistry to convince me they'd make a great couple.
Take
THIS scene, for example. (I'd love to embed it for you guys, but the user has disabled embedding! :( ) When I first saw it, I was cringing the entire way through. It felt very forced to me - like they were just reciting words off a page. I just didn't buy it. Now that I think about it, it may have been Anna Torv's acting, because upon rewatching the clip, it seems like Joshua Jackson is acting his part but Anna Torv isn't quite connecting.
I have to admit that this scene is a lot better:

But still. In comparison to the crazy amount of subtext and chemistry that Anna Torv has with her female costars/guest stars? Well. This doesn't quite measure up.
(Also, is it really so much to ask for a man and a woman on TV to just be friends?)
2) When she actually has a scene with Astrid, Olivia(/Anna Torv) somehow manages to gay it up.
Brown Betty anyone? If you saw this scene, you know what I mean. There was some definite flirting going on between Astrid and Olivia!
3) Rachel and Olivia have an insane amount of chemistry together.
Firstly, I know they're sisters. BUT STILL. Just watch a scene with them. I remember the first season, when Rachel first showed up - I was surprised at how gay their interactions were. And don't even get me started on the Rachel/Olivia (and Ella) scene in 02x22! Damn. Please - I doubt anyone really looks at their sister the way Olivia looks at Rachel, and vice versa. If that isn't chemistry, I don't know what is.
Here's the scene I'm talking about. Olivia is giving her necklace to her niece, Ella, "to keep [Ella] safe" because Olivia is going to an alternate universe and is pretty sure she's not coming back. This necklace is a pretty big deal, because Olivia's grandmother (?) gave it to her and now she's handing it down. Then Olivia goes into the kitchen and gets ready to go, when her sister Rachel comes up in her bathrobe, looking cosy and very much like a wife. While talking to her wife sister, Olivia looks like she's looking at her lips (I didn't use the cap of that, but it was there - I swear!). I'm sure Rachel is like, "Honey, my eyes are up here."
Anyway, they hug (but notice in the third cap how Rachel/Ari is looking at Olivia/Anna? GAY), and when they pull apart - ohmygod, this shot is just so wonderful and so gay and THEY ARE TOTALLY GONNA GET GAY!MARRIED IN AN ALTERNATE UNIVERSE WHERE THEY ARE NOT REALLY SISTERS, OKAY?
Oh, and then in less happy news, Ella is definitely up and out of bed with the necklace her Aunt Liv just gave to her, and Rachel notices. And she knows exactly what that means.
THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN TELL ME YOU LOOK AT YOUR SIBLING LIKE THAT. Need a bigger picture? WHY OKAY, SURE THING, I'M GLAD YOU ASKED.
The way Ari looks at Anna is intimate and smiley and cute all at the same time. I love how happy Olivia gets around her fam bam.
I couldn't find a clip of the Olivia/Rachel scene in 02x22, but someone did clip the season 1 interactions of these two ladies, and you can view them
HERE if you're interested. The 02x22 scene is 1000 times gayer than the other scenes clipped in the link, so... use your imagination if you haven't seen it yet? (Or Hulu it, if you're in the USA).
4) How AWESOME is Alternate!Olivia?
Pretty awesome. I like her personality (though towards the end, there was something about her that creeped me out), her jacket, and the fringe (bangs) is ... actually, I'm not sure how I feel about the fringe. It's okay, I guess. I think she has more chemistry with her coworkers in the alternate universe than ourworld!Olivia did with Peter.
Anyway, I'd love to hear your thoughts, whether you agree or not! :) Also, if you feel like discussing the (awesome, awesome, AMAZING) finale, feel free to do that in the comments!
