Are you my mummy?

He had been staying out of the Master's way as much as possible for the past week or so - it didn't take a brilliant mind like his to sort out that the Master didn't like him very well.  If it weren't for Rose, he was certain he'd have been dumped out into the nearest black hole they came across a long time ago.  As big as the TARDIS was, he knew ( Read more... )

The Master wanted to be alone with Rose for a while, leaving Jack with no option than to try to entertain himself. The TARDIS was drifting in the vortex, ruling out the idea of finding a bar. Obviously the next best option was making his own bar - of sorts. He was certain he had stocked up on drinks on their last stop; even if he couldn't have some company, at least he could have the comfort of a stiff drink.

He walked into the kitchen, expecting to find it as empty as he had last seen it, and was surprised to find it currently in use.

By the Master's hand.

It had been nearly a week since he had seen John, and frankly he had almost forgot the other man was still on board. While the Master may not enjoy John's company.. well, Jack still wasn't sure what to make of him. But at the moment he was in need of company, and there was an old saying that he felt was appropriate.
'Beggars can't be choosers.'

"Well, well, well. What do we have here?"

At the sound behind him, John jumps with a start, nearly knocking the blender over in the process. Some of the smoothie is spilt onto the counter, but is hardly noticed as he turns around. He knew Jack's voice anywhere, but the ever-looming dread that the Master was nearby was enough to make him skittish from a kitten.

"Jack!" He said, almost sounding as relieved as he felt at seeing Jack alone, "Hello, care for a smoothie?"

Jack smiled at seeing John startle, knowing exactly the cause of it. He supposed he felt a little sympathy for him, but it didn't go beyond that.

He walked over next to John and leaned on the counter, running a finger through the banana mess before putting the finger in his mouth.

"Mmm. Not that bad - though I'm pretty sure it'd be a lot better in a glass." He turned to retrieve two glasses from the cupboard, "Haven't seen you in a few days. Where've you been hiding yourself?"

Augh, he hated it when Jack smiled like that. It may have looked nice, but unfortunately he knew what generally went on underneath it. But still, John wasn't about to pick any fights - especially since Jack was the Master's favourite pet.

"Me? Hiding? Never! I've just been busy, is all." Not bothering to clean up the mess, he disconnected the blender and poured it into the glasses Jack provided, "Say, speaking of busy.. Have you seen Rose lately? I wanted to ask her something."

Jack cocked a brow at John. The Hand was up to something, he was sure of it. And whatever that something was had to do with Rose.

"She's with Master. In the console room." He took a drink from the glass before holding the other out for John, "Why don't you ask me instead? Wouldn't want to bother her while the two of them are spending some quality time together, now would you?"

He didn't know what this was all about, but he might as well give the Hand a chance to confess. That, or give himself more rope to hang himself with. Either would do fine, Jack wasn't very picky.

The jib that threatened to show in his face was quickly crushed back down. If he avoided talking to Jack about this, it would only get back to the Master and look a little bad on his side. That didn't mean he was about to step one foot out of the TARDIS without Rose knowing what he was going to do, but maybe Jack would feel like being nice for a day - or at least have nothing better to do - and lend him a hand.

He smiles pleasantly at Jack and took the offered glass, "I wanted to talk to her about the next time we stop somewhere. I was thinking that I might go out for a bit. Get some fresh air, pick up a few things that I needed, grab some chips. You know. Just stuff."

"Mmm." Jack said noncommittally. It seemed harmless enough, and didn't seem as though it might interfere with any of the Master's plans. But then again, he had been keeping to himself for an unusual amount of time.. it was possible he was up to something.

"Just stuff, huh? What kind of things did you need to pick up?"

And here came the interrogation. Jack might have had a pleasant face on, but that didn't change the fact of what this was.

John sighed and set the glass back down, turning to face Jack properly. "I need a soldering kit, some ping pong balls or golf balls, glue, duct tape, and sherbert lemons. I'll stay out of the way, I won't bother anyone, and I'm not asking Rose to go with me. I'll be in the TARDIS before the Master's ready to leave - I'll even leave after everyone else."

"All I want to do is let Rose know I want to go out. Nothing else. I just don't want to be left behind."

Well, if one thing was to be said about the Hand, it wasn't that he wasn't smart. He knew his place - most of the time, anyway. And Jack couldn't hold it against John for not wanting to be left behind.. he knew the Hand would know just how heart breaking that could be.

"Alright." He said finally, finishing off the last of the smoothie, "I'll let Rose know you want to talk to her - and then I'll tell Master."

Jack headed back towards the door, setting the dirty glass on a table on the other side of the room just to inconvenience John, and flashed one of his charming smiles back at him, "Don't forget, Hand. You owe me for this."

And John did. Telling the Master after telling Rose was absolutely suicide -- but if he did it in any other order, Rose would never find out. It had been a while since the Master had punished him, though.

He missed the attention.
