A Long Time in Coming

I know. I know I know I know. This is sort of ridiculous. "If you haven't been part of our LJ community for the past six months, Marshall, why update at all?" Well, I'll tell you, there are a lot of interesting and crazy things going on in my life that I'm really excited to share with you. And it's forty minutes til I leave for work on a hot summer morning... why NOT update?

I was going to do a massive, Top 100-style list of all the things that made this first year what it was, but my brain started overloading. I just faded into reveries whenever I would start to come up with anything. Some of the list included: My San Diegans (the friends who I've become like family with, as well as those who aren't actually FROM SD but who are, like me, basically surrogate residents... particularly Alex, because we keep each other sane); The public transportation system, which liberated me from an attachment to my keys and my car (which I did't have anyways) and taught me the value of getting out and exploring; Alison and all of her friends, and ESPECIALLY her family, who I essentially live with, and who take care of me like one of their own; the big city... honestly, I dunno what to say... I've grown so much in the past year (which I'm still denying has gone by, by the way... all you kids going to college for the first time, don't let it slip away so quickly if you can), become more confident and self-assertive, dove into my interests and taken risks... learned so much, both scholastically and in terms of life and love and friendship. UCLA is one of the best and most important decisions of my life, it has really surprised me with its power to enrich and to enlighten.

And so now, summer... and as you might already know, I wasn't ready to part with LA for three months. I've been taking World Cinema, living in a westwood apartment with two guys named Malcolm and Martin... yeah, I know, we're ridiculously alliterative. And I'm interning at this company Film and Music Entertainment, which is the most fun job I've ever had (read back to my Marine World entries of yesteryear to see what a feat that actually is), complete with a hilarious british staff, chihuahuas, and the executive producer of Terminator and Platoon. It's really amazing, and I've just been invited to come with the crew to the East Coast in Fall to work on the production of a new film, which I couldn't be more excited about. This is going to be raucous.

And I'm writing again. Writing intensely. Writing a feature-length screenplay about genetics and public policy actually. I'm really enjoying it. As of late, my creative drive has been off the charts.

I will try to remember more things for future summer updates, and will do a long one on the other night when i went to see Pepper with Charlie Roberts, which really deserves an entry of its own, and more on my future plans soon. Let's just say, I'm excited and am having one of the best times of my life :)
