Been thinking about and meaning to post on so many music things, but figured I'd just run them all together in short notes:1. I am not as cool as I think I am. Sure Vladislav Delay's 'The Four Quarters' has rocked me recently, but everything that is modern is boring the crap out of me. I am much more MOR than I realized. Let's all drink to the Death of a Clown, eh?
2. At the GAP yesterday I heard The Pixies and the day before at a mildly posh restaurant PJ Harvey was ringing out on the piped in. Can't say I'm ahead of the curve anymore.
3. I don't mind the new Echo and The Bunnymen album, still hate Interpol except for that one song which I never can place and actually think is the Hot Hot Heat, and don't mind but can't for the life of me understand The Bloc Party's breakthrough popularity.
4. Paul McCartney's new album is awesome.
5. Beck has disappointed me.
6. Paul McCartney's 'Ram' is a major underrated album of the 1970's.
7. Why is anyone listening to anything besides The Kinks?
8. Why is anyone listening to the Kaiser Chiefs? Why will I DJ them tomorrow night?
9. I'm beginning to give up on Soulwax and 2 Many DJs.
10. Why in looking back fondly at the 80's does no one look to Bryan Ferry's solo albums?
11. Those albums were produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic. Chic is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ahead of Van Halen and people are complaining. These people, in the least, should be considered unsophisticated.
12. Chic produced Diana Ross's album 'Diana!' That album is a disco classic and has one of the greatest singles ever on it: "I'm Coming Out!" The deluxe two disc set of this album, with Ms. Ross's redone final mix in comparison to Chic's original unused mix (a fascinating lesson in production, e.g. Chic's winding bass/guitar solos on the original of the above mentioned single vs. the final mix's built up vocal) and a whole set of disco singles is ab fab.
13. Contemporary power-pop-esque bands are not that good. I'm looking at you Wolf Parade and My Morning Jacket and I might as well throw in Death Cab for Cutie for the hell of it. I know, they aren't exactly power-pop.
That is all for now. Perhaps more to come...
