Who else thinks that the new Interpol album is somewhat disappointing?
When I got it a few months ago, I listened to it through one or two times, perhaps not too closely, but nonetheless was instantly disappointed. Not to say that it's bad or anything, just after listening to Turn on the Bright Lights again tonight, I don't think it can compare. On many of the tracks off the new album I hear what seems to be the less fortunate sibling of a similar song from their first album - basically, many of the new songs just sound like stripped down versions of songs from their debut. There's greater emphasis on Paul Bank's vocals, and the way in which he utilizes his voice sounds forced and detached. The music itself doesn't hold the same flowing, adventurous, and morose feel of Turn on the Bright Lights. The beautiful ambient textures of the first album just don't appear as prevalently on Antics. Sadly, the bass feels like an after-thought now. Carlos D got the short end of the stick this time around, which seems ironic after proving his talents with many amazing and memorable bass lines on Bright Lights. Not to mention, the lyrics themselves just aren't as "genius" as before.
Come on, how can you top "I'm gonna pull you in close gonna wrap you up tight/gonna play with the braids that you came here with tonight/I'm gonna hold your face and toast the snow that fell/because friends don't waste wine when there's words to sell"??
