May is pretty much the most awesome month of the year for those of us without allergies. The weather's fucking awesome, there's usually a bit of leisure time, and I go batshit insane every year. Why insane? Well, I don't have a permanent home, and yet I always feel the irresistible desire to put a garden in.
Well this year I'm moving into a rented house. Bring on the tomatoes, motherfuckers!
As most local folks know, I'm moving in with
taliface and
franzferdinand2 to share the 3-bedroom house they rent. Since it's a house, it's got a yard. And the yard has sunshine, so I can grow things. Haha~! I just have to do some manual labor and put in the raised bed I've got planned out. Anyone want to do some manual labor for me? Or more importantly, does anyone out there have a vehicle that is able to carry 4 pieces of 8-foot long lumber? Also, anyone know of anywhere locally to obtain topsoil?
To Be Planted In The Bed:
1. TOMATOES. (I've got at least 6 different heirloom varieties that include Cherokee Purples, Green Zebras, some super-tiny cherries, these little yellow pear-shaped ones, some other cherries, and something else I can't remember)
2. Summer Squash (some yellow crook-neck type)
3. Cucumbers (theoretically disease resistant and quick-growing)
4. Green Beans (an heirloom bush variety)
5. Sweet Basil (a vast quantity)
6. Peppers for Dana
7. Whatever Else I Fucking Desire (maybe some flowers or herbs to fill in space, or something by request)
To Be Planted In Pots:
1. Chives
2. English Thyme
3. Catnip
4. Winter Savory
5. Rosemary
6. Spearmint
7. Lettuces (I've got some old seeds that might still grow, despite age and the late planting date)
To Be Planted Elsewhere:
1. Sweetpea Flowers (an especially sweetly-scented variety)
2. Cosmos (various colors)
3. Nasturtiums (these might end up filling space in the veggie bed)
If anyone has some sort of vegetable (or herb or whatever) that they think I should grow, feel free to mention it in a comment. I'm already planning on putting in some bell-peppers for Dana, despite the fact that I hate bell-peppers, so I can go ahead and add whatever else anyone wants.
The summary of all this rambling: In a couple months, I'm going to be up to my ass in well-loved, organically-grown vegetables and will likely be foisting them off on various friends. So beware.
My father's coming down this Saturday to help me move the furniture that I can't get into my car, most significantly the bed. This means that as of Saturday night, I and the cats will be sleeping at the house, rather than the apartment. Let's hope none of the cats flip out.
I'll be temporarily inhabiting Ben's room until Brandon moves out. No one, not even Brandon, has any idea when this will happen, though I've heard quiet mumblings about "some time in June." Haha.
Final Note: I could really use the assistance of a truck, van or SUV in the near future for toting garden supplies from Lowes. It should only take a few minutes of your time (the Lowes is a little over a mile away from the house), so any volunteers? I'll feed you?
Merritt is my bestest friend ever. Also, lumber has been obtained!
