best thing about where i work?  no-one knows nuffink about the internet.

one of my jobs recently was to overhaul our band The Zico Chain's myspace, and save it from the unorganised mess it had become.  this was because i'd one day a while back volunteered to do something with our Hassle and Full Time Hobby myspaces, due to them being tres dull and boring.  what i did to them totally wasn't much, although it was slightly time consuming doing all the code stuff, given that i don't really know about all that malarky, even though it was dead simple code (the problem was that because i'm not a million percent used to it, if i stare at html code for a while, my brain fries).  anyhoo, Chris was really happy with what i did, even though it hella basic - see here for Hassle and here for Full Time Hobby - and therefore, told the band that i was "really good with all the internet stuff" and got me to overhaul their site, as it looked very slapdash and a bit useless.  so anyway, i had a little sit down with them, and found out what they wanted (aside from "white background with black boxes", they didn't know a thing) and have spent a fair portion of time recently, and a lot this week, making it look slightly shitloads better.

take a look here (i fully expect no-one that's one of my LJ mates to actually like the band): www.myspace.com/thezicochain

i had to get the banners made (gonna get moving ones soon, i reckon), and learn how to make the boxes to put the code in, but it's the little touches that i like the most.  like, if you click on the band's picture, it takes you to a bigger version of that.  ditto the press (just waiting on more scans to add more there).  or if you click on the band member's individual influences, it takes you to that band's own myspace/website.  it's little usability things like that which i enjoy.  also, i got to write the brief biog and stuff, so it's pretty cool, even if once again, it really is in no way complicated, especially as i used MyGen for all the background etc.  it's also not finished yet, as we're going to add a merch bit and, like i said, more press, but it's come such a long way from what it was and in my own small, sad way, i'm really quite proud of it..

anyway, back to the original point.  i showed it to Chris and Nigel today, and they were absolutely gobsmacked.  "that looks amazing, really well done etc etc", which is all awesome.  getting praise is awesome.  but the best bit was that i was able to fob them off with just how long it took me, as they know NOTHING about the internet.  "yeah, it's taken me such a long time, but i think it's worth it".  true, it has taken me a long time (finding and adjusting all the album graphics was such a pain), but i reckon they think it's taken even longer and so now i'm some kind of web hero in the office.  hurrah for that!

ah, cracking stuff.
