Laptops in the Classroom
In the United States schools are considering bringing in laptops and purging themselves of books. Now is this an inconvenience or a blessing? This has been a controversial issue for years. Another question for the people are the school systems considering everything? Everything being the financial cost, the safety of the computer, how far the security be on the system will go, among other considerations. I have to admit there are good points to having laptops instead of books.
Let’s look on the bright side before we go to the dark side of the evils of laptops. In high school the number, and weight of the literature that you have to schlep around is astounding. In my freshmen year I didn’t have a locker the weight of all my books was an even twenty-seven pounds. Luckily with the new laptops the student bodies of our great nation won’t have the broken blood vessels that I had. A 7th student in Connecticut,
Viafore says “And since the computer arrived not one student has ‘forgotten’ to bring his or her computer to school”. The computers do have all the programs that the pupil needs to do projects and papers for classes, for example Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Studies show that grades of middle to high school students have increased in some areas in part due to the laptops. According to a sources students increase use of the computers at home and school for academic purposes.
Okay , now for the evil that laptops pose on the schools, the students, and the rest of the people, I told you it wasn’t going to be all good I’m not going to put an angelic face on something I’m against. First of all the cost, the Cobb County School board is already in debt up to their residing hairlines. So, what makes them think that can afford something that has costs up to $80,000 or even $1.8 billion? They can’t afford new biology text books but somehow they can get laptops that cost an estimated $2,000 a student for 3,000 students. Hold on let’s do some math $2,000x3,000= $6,000,000.What are they thinking, where is that money going to come from? What!?!? I don’t hear anyone answering my endless queries. I’m going to demand you to think, think about the freshmen straight out of middle school, where they still have their hands held. How are they going to keep up with a laptop? They drop their belongings all the time, and what are a broken, expensive laptop. Plus the insurance cost about $50 dollars for each one.
