When Joe Dawson was a little boy, his father used to tell him the most wonderful stories. Stories of men and women and their escapades throughout history. Whenever Joe asked a question, his father would say, "If you don't believe me, read for yourself." Then he would hand Joe a book and the two of them would read for hours on end.

Joe's father traveled a lot. Many times his travels would take him to a different country. When he returned, he'd always bring home a gift for Joe. Sometimes it was a toy, or an article of clothing, but more often than not, he brought home a new book.

Many nights the two of them would sit in his father's study, Joe with a new book, his father bent over his desk, scribbling furiously into a journal. It wasn't until Joe was older that he realized that the books he'd been reading had been the writings of his father.

When asked, his father replied, "What good is it to live a life if no one knows you're there? It is important for us to watch, and learn. Watch, and learn." Joe didn't understand his father's words, and the elder Dawson refused to explain.

Years passed. War broke out, and Joe found himself on the verge of suicide. He had no life, nothing to live for... until he heard the words, "We'd like you to become a Watcher."
