This is the third installment of the Fic Commentary Meme, where you request 'em and I annotate 'em ( original post here). This one was requested by prynne12. The original text of this story can be found here.
The only time I read 'The Scarket Letter' was in high school, and so my memory of the book jives with Rose's description. Obviously I need to read it again, with more life experience I expect it will feel different.
I just had to look up what "GCSE" stood for. Sounds very complicated. They have only just now passed a law requiring a high school exit exam here in California, it was very controversial.
I'm a fan of Hawthorne as well, and I would really have loved for you to squeeze in the scene about Screwtape.
And you know what? I think the Doctor reads. I can see him obsessively reading, which probably explains the fic I've been working on involving Eliot...but whatever. I'm of the opinion that for history, he'd love nothing more than to see it happen, but I think he'd be fascinated by the written word and how humans/other species express themselves through it.
