For some reason Livejournal won't let me upload a photo so here's a link to follow.
I hope this works.
Yesterday's and today's posts are tied together a bit. Kanyro Higashiona's student Chojun Miyagi is today's spotlight. Miyagi was born in 1888 in Naha Okinawa. At age 14 he met Master Higashiona and soon after became a "uchi Deshi". This means he lived with his instructor and became his personal student. After 14 years or so Higashiona died and Miyagi was named the successor of Naha-te. Miyagi then traveled to China to study with the Shaolin and Pa Kua arts that his master had studied years earlier. Taking the "linear" and "circular" styles he learned in China and the Naha-te from Master Kanryo, Miyagi further developed his art and in 1929 founded what is known today as Goju Ryu. Miyagi died in October of 1953 leaving many prominent students, but consciously choosing no one to succeed him. A few students formed their own schools and styles and a few others tried their best to continue the ideals and philosophies of their teacher. The particular student that falls in my line is Gogen Yamaguchi. we'll probably talk about him another day.
I'm sure many of you might have recognized the name Miyagi. Mr. Miyagi from "The Karate Kid" was named after Chojun Miyagi. Another neat thing about the film was while no mention of the name "goju" was made, the forms, symbols, and many of the techniques can be found in Goju.
