Moritz

Sweets was working his way through a stack of paperwork, trying to be clear about his sessions with Delirium before he moved on to someone easier like Webster or Willie. He heard the door open and before he even saw who was there, he had the file folder closed. When he saw the face in the doorway he smiled, rose from his seat, and went to greet him ( Read more... )

Moritz smiles nervously, holding his hand out in greeting. "Yes -- good to see you as well. Thank you again, for this. I hope it will help." Melchior can't help him, this time, which is an unsettling feeling in and of itself. "How... does this work, exactly? How do we start?"

Sweets shook his hand, offered a reassuring smile, then gestured to the various chairs.

"Why don't you pick a seat, get comfortable, and we can just talk. There's no real agenda for these things."

"Thank you..." Moritz settles into a chair, crossing his legs, then changing his mind and tucking them under him instead.

"How... how are you, then?" he asks, unsure how else to start the conversation.

"I'm doing well. Settling in, I have my work and friends. How about you?" he asked as he sat down, no more formal than any chat in the kitchen over coffee.

He fidgets with the ends of his sleeves and chews at his lip a little. "Well enough. I have friends here. We get along quite well. There are people who care about me..." He doesn't know whether to smile or cry at that; to be happy to finally have people who care, or sad that he never really had that at home.

Typist: Eh heh, let's pretend like I don't fail XD I forgot it was my turn to tag.

"That's an important thing. To be cared about and cared for. That goes to the core of human needs. Right up there with food and shelter," Sweets replied. "How are your classes going?"

Moritz hesitates a moment before answering. "I'm not... sure, yet. My professors seem nice enough. I didn't get the class I wanted with Glen, though."

Another long moment of awkward fidgeting before he adds, "I only took classes because Melchior was doing it. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered."

"Because of how it was where you came from?" he asked, just to clarify.

"I suppose..." Moritz bites harder at his lip, trying to hide behind his hair a little. "I never did well. I always got terrible marks. The teachers hated me. Though Melchi seemed to enjoy it."

"Is it any different for you here?"

He knew his classes certainly weren't like any at Columbia...more overview than anything really. There was nothing at stake. It was all just for knowledge and self- improvement. At least, Sweets thought, he recognized his bias when it came to school.

"Much. I do not understand half of what my professors say, but I get help with the English. I wish there was a class for English lessons. Donald used to give me them, but he is gone now. None of the professors here beat the students, which is... new, but good."

Moritz will always have a strong bias against school; each time he makes a mistake, he braces himself to be hit with a rod or rapped across the knuckles with a ruler.

"I don't think that beating the students is something that's going to happen here," he pointed out. "So that should relieve one worry. Do you feel that you could ask your teachers for help after class with the things you didn't understand while they were speaking?"

"Oh -- I usually ask Melchior. He speaks better English than I do. But... I suppose... I could?" The thought of actually speaking to a professor, asking them questions, seems mildly terrifying. Asking Donald questions was easier, because it was just the two of them. But the professor of a whole class was... intimidating.

"Of course you could. I welcome questions from my students," Sweets said with a nod. "The school is voluntary, so the people who teach do it because they want to help their students learn things, not just kill time."

He picked up on the nervousness and leaned forward a little. A gentle smile graced his lips and he unconsciously nodded a little more.

"You've mentioned Melchior before. You're friends, right?"

"Melchior is..." Moritz ducks his head a little, smiling with a faint blush. "He is more than my friend, now. He has been my very closest friend since we were young, and we are now together. As -- as lovers, I suppose?"

Typist: Let's pretend like I don't fail entirely XD Apologies.

Sweets simply nodded again and decided to note that tidbit of information later. It would definitely be worth keeping track of. Given the boy's history, an intimate relationship could be either healthy or disastrous.

"I see. It clearly makes you happy," he noted. "How young were you when you met?"
