DVD Commentary on an excerpt from Dead on Arrival for phistolemon_. The meme in question is still open, so by all means, come satisfy your curiosity :)

The barrel of the gun is cold against his jaw, and even the bullet buried in his guts doesn't hurt as much as the wounded-animal noises of disbelief and betrayal Larry's making. He's in so fucking far over his head he couldn't see the surface with a fucking telescope. Maybe he was in over his head right from the fucking start. He didn't just get attached, he moved right on in and set up fucking housekeeping.

Heh, looking over this paragraph again, I'm struck by how many times I used the word 'fucking' in such a short span XD I did worry a little about that when I first put the fic up, but...eh, it's not like they don't swear constantly in the film.

The barrel of the gun is cold against his jaw, I like this phrase. It's short, effctive, and in the space of less than a sentence the reader knows exactly which part of the film I'm talking about. When you're in that much pain, your world is reduced to physical sensation. It'll take something major to penetrate; a gun to the head fits the bill pretty well. and even the bullet buried in his guts doesn't hurt as much as the wounded-animal noises of disbelief and betrayal Larry's making. Of course there's physical pain and there's psychological pain...and right now Freddy is deeply, deeply fucked up. 'Wounded-animal' I chose because those were the first words that came to mind on watching the film. Those sounds sent shivers down my spine. He's in so fucking far over his head he couldn't see the surface with a fucking telescope. I'm overly fond of this metaphor - I'm sure I've used it in something else before. Maybe he was in over his head right from the fucking start. He didn't just get attached, he moved right on in and set up fucking housekeeping. That last sentence there? The entire point of the fic. The 'four times' he gets shot show a change, kind of an...erosion of certainties, with physical pain as a metaphor for emotional turmoil. Because Freddy seems fundamentally unsuited to undercover work. You get the impression that he genuinely likes the crooks he's supposed to be taking down, and that can't be healthy. And thus: the first time, he doesn't even feel it. The second time, he's hurting but manages to pull himself together, but this section also introduces the beginnings of uncertainty. The third time is where it starts getting complicated - the 'facade becoming real'. By the fourth and final time, he's so conflicted he welcomes an end to it.

...and I totally didn't do any of this deliberately, but apparently my subconscious knows what it's about better than I do XD

On an unrelated note, way to go America on taking the first steps towards socialized healthcare :D Normally I wouldn't comment, but I was monumentally pissed off at the slandering of the NHS from the campaigners against. Guys. Seriously. It works.
