Cortège smirked. "Speaking so ill of the dead," she replied quietly. Another sip of tea, and she continued, "You're being very defensive, Sir Doberman, and what for? If you've got nothing to hide, you should be fine." Yet Cortège could all chalk it up to just handling Deborah's death his own way; nice, juicy and bitter.

Nonetheless, she continued to push. If Jeff chose to walk out or stay, it didn't matter; he'd give answers no matter what he did. "Also, there's something fishy in what you said. If a person gets killed, they're certainly not first and foremost called an 'idiot,' unless they had been doing or saying something that would have you give me this response."

Cortège absentmindedly jogged these notes down without looking; a talent she had mastered some time ago. "So I must ask: had she been doing something, for lack of a better word, 'bad' lately? Perhaps seeing or speaking to the wrong people?" She shrugged lightly. "Maybe drug dealers? Drug users can go into relapses, you know... Any erratic behavior that could drive this in for the kill or scare it away?"

"Look!" He started, rubbing his eyes with his hands and looked at the other with an annoyed but a sad expression. "...whatever, she is dead, so what?"

Cortège continued to smile. "I'm very well aware that she's dead, and it's tragic that we had to meet under such circumstances..." Not really, though, but you had to play ball with them. "... But adding onto your observation, your ex-girlfriend was also supposedly murdered. And that isn't exactly something we can merely brush off, you know?"

Cortège leaned forward a little, push his tea just an inch or two closer. "You're avoiding the subject, you're shooting down my questions, among other things." Her head titled and one eye narrowed, but that grin did not fade. "You know, these are good signs of someone lying. I'm not here to break you, or demand horrendous things of you; I'm here to clear up the murder of the woman you once loved, the woman I'm sure you still cared for even after the break-up."

She rested her hands in her lap with the notebook. "The best thing you can do right now is to answer my questions, Sir Doberman," Cortège said softly, but there was no such tone in her eyes.

Would she give him a damn break? Whatever, he placed his hands in his pockets and body was tense, glaring at the other as though she was just an utter bitch but his tone was soft. "she's dead, nothing you can do about it."

"There is," Cortège countered. "The more you hesitate to answer, the more guilty you're going to look." She tapped her fingernails on the table. "I don't see the harm in telling me what you know if you're innocent, Sir Doberman."

She then idily took a drink of her tea and sat it down. "Of course, it could be you're feeling guilty," Cortège said.

Shrugging, she continued, "I mean, you did break up with her and date her friend. Ruined love life, ruined friendship--could just ruin your entire life. Especially from a girl whose been through oh so much and relied on heavy support to keep her away from that icky temptation."

Cortège flatened her hand on the table. "I can see this is a hard time for you, be it for one reason or another, but I must assure you, I will not be the only one to come. There will be others, and they will pry and pry, until eventually you may break down. So you can make this easy and just tell me what I need to know."

With that, she sat back again, spread her arms and smile. "The field's all yours, Sir Doberman. As cliche as it is, it's just you and me. I'm lawful good, my boy, and I just want to help. If you're like me, you will too."
