The Lion and the Serpent

Useless Fact: This is the chapter I read first when I got my copy, purely on the basis of the title.

Heh. I love Hermione’s dialogue. So natural.

*snicker* I guess it makes sense that only a Muggleborn who studied this stuff would know what those numbers meant, since I'm sure most Purebloods don't even notice them, but still...pretty clearly a little bit of LOOK HOW WELL THIS WORLD IS BUILT here! It's funny to imagine a Muggle equivalent: "See these numbers here? Usually that's just the plate serial number indicating the serial number of the plate from which a note was printed..."

"Oh yes, of course. Everyone knows that, but thank you for reminding me."

And yYes, I did have to look that up myself.

To be fair, we never see any reaction from Snape when “odd things ke(ep) happening” to Slytherin students, such as being hexed with “horrible skin complaints” and having to miss class thanks to “growing antlers”.

Although I doubt too many readers remember that Snape's never shown making a fuss in other places later in the book, even when his "favorite" pupils appear to be getting smacked down right and left. Actually, I wonder if we'll see any clues to how Snape feels about the IS in general. Did he encourage it?

I don’t quite get the point of this sentence. The Gryffindors are so deluded they think they’re already International standard? (Well, it’s probably not a delusion.

I think it's a sign that the Gryffindors are trying to make Ron feel more confident (the key to everything) by over-praising him. So when he makes a save they compare it to a famous professional save.

Also it's in this book the Slytherins appear to really be pulling together - at the end of GoF, there was some speculation over whether there was dissent in the house, since it appeared to be only Crabbe, Goyle and Malfoy who didn't rise to toast Harry;

Yeah, funny how that works. Is it just the three of them or is it just that some Slytherins don't rise for Harry and they're included? I feel like part of the reason for that is clearly Draco and his gang couldn't toast Harry, but at the same time JKR didn't want to make it an all-out declaration of hatred by Slytherin because Dumbledore would have to show some reaction to that, and besides it would draw too much attention to Slytherin and we can't have that, so she just sort of hedged it.

Smoking’s for kippers!

LOL! From now on this will be code for everytime a Gryffindor, especially Harry, says something lame and everybody laughs like it's very witty.

So why is Ron now such a wimp?

I think because Draco's always at his most evil when he's found an actual sore spot in someone apart from Harry or Hermione--like when Neville says Draco reminds him he's...whatever it is he says Draco told him he was in PS/SS. That he didn't belong in Gryffindor?

"You know, I rather liked Luna when I first saw her, but I've now come to the conclusion that she's really not that eccentric or peculiar at all. After all, despite all her posturing and humourous jewellery, she still attends Quidditch in support of Gryffindor (and why? What reason has she to care?)She appears to half-inch all her thoughts from other authorities - mostly her father and the rest of The Quibbler - and does little besides wearing funny hats. She's only odd to people with no imagination or soul (Hermione types, for example)."

Yes, it's about as far as anyone is allowed to be alternative or rebellious in this universe. If you're going to be "different" you have to do it by supporting Dumbledore. Otherwise you're the wrong kind of different. The armed forces are the number one career choice of alternative types.

'Good luck, Ron,' said Hermione, standing on tiptoe and kissing him on the cheek. 'And you, Harry -'
Ron seemed to come to himself slightly as they walked back across the Great Hall."

I think he's wondering why he never noticed Hermione is a middle-aged woman who confidently kisses boys on the cheek to wish them luck on their game.

"See these numbers here? Usually that's just the plate serial number indicating the serial number of the plate from which a note was printed..."

Heheheheh.

Is it just the three of them or is it just that some Slytherins don't rise for Harry and they're included?

'Many others', apparently. Oops.
Which often gets confused with not rising for Cedric. (Which I don't recall the Slytherin reaction being observed beyond 'muttering', which provoked HARRY'S ANGER11!!! GRR!11 ;)

From now on this will be code for everytime a Gryffindor, especially Harry, says something lame and everybody laughs like it's very witty.

I claim 'git', 'hem hem' and that faux-funny bit at the end about how you'd think he'd stop walking around. (That actually did make me laugh, but not in the spirit intended, I don't think ;)

Draco's always at his most evil when he's found an actual sore spot in someone apart from Harry or Hermione

Of course. They don't have any. Their chivalrous anger is only aroused by attacks on others, like Hagrid or Lily.

Although I doubt too many readers remember that Snape's never shown making a fuss in other places later in the book, even when his "favorite" pupils appear to be getting smacked down right and left.

No kidding. Snape took 10 points when Harry was threatening to curse a student right in front of him. And 5 points when Ron dives on a student right in front of him.
He doesn't appear that protective, really. (And of course, if he adores and is soft towards his Slytherins, the favourite calling him sir with every other breath looks a bit odd.)
As opposed to McGonagall, the icon of fair judgement, who gives out detentions and takes fifty points for what she describes as a "trick".

I think he's wondering why he never noticed Hermione is a middle-aged woman who confidently kisses boys on the cheek to wish them luck on their game.

I know! Actually, this is the one and only time I will ever say this, but the (CoS) movie!incarnation who paused before even hugging was somewhat more realistic.
