Having finally had the assessor out to see if I qualify for a free new central heating/hot water boiler back on the 30th of September, who said yes I did qualify, followed by a week of phoning up to find out when the engineer was coming round to measure up for the new boiler today I get a letter.
I don't qualify for the new boiler. Why? because I already have cavity wall and loft insulation, and you if your house doesn't meet a certain energy inefficiency criteria then you don't get one or any help towards one.
So today has been spent phoning boiler repair companies. Have ended up with British Gas. As they will do a flat rate all in fee of £99 (all parts, labour, etc) if you sign up for a one year service plan. It's twenty quid a month that I could do without spending really, but the boiler is getting old (eight and a half years) and this cover does mean that if it goes wrong they'll come out an fix it for no extra cost.
When I told the person at British Gas that that I'd got no heating (house has nothing but the radiators that run off the boiler) and he could hear Alexander playing around in the background he said he'd see about getting the work done quickly. Put me on hold for a minute or two while he called round and they are coming to fix the boiler tomorrow morning :) Anytime between 8 and 1pm.
So I see an evening of cleaning the kitchen happening for me :( so probably no writing getting done tonight.
