I mentioned this almost a year ago in my top 5 games I
wish I’d finished but never really elaborated. Final Fantasy 6 is the second
best RPG I have played (three guesses what number one is and the first two don’t
count) and mostly because of the characters and the central theme of loss and
finding your purpose. I could have picked any scene from the second half of the
game but I picked Cid’s death.
Let me paint the scene: the villain has won and the
world is destroyed. Our heroes were scattered to the four winds and all hope is
lost. Fade to black...
We catch up with Celes and Cid a year later with her waking from a coma. Cid
has been caring for her while she was asleep and we soon find the two becoming basically
grandfather and granddaughter. They are all alone on a near barren rock in a seemingly
endless ocean and as far as they know they are the last people alive and everyone
they cared about is gone.
You get control when Cid is getting sick and you have to go catch fish for him.
Once you do this three times he dies and leaves you well and truly alone. Celes
throws herself off a cliff only to wash back up on the shore and find a bird
with Locke’s bandana tied round its neck. With the knowledge that the man she
secretly loves is still alive she goes out gets the band back together and
kicks ass all the way. OK so sad scene right? Well guess what?
You can save Cid’s life.
Yes his death is ALL YOUR FAULT.
Next is Best gameplay and *sniffle* sorry just got
something in my eye. Anyway I’m sure you can all guess what time it is again
tomorrow. *sniffle* So for now I’m Silica and I can’t believe Gampa Cid died
cause of me. *sobs*
