I had a thought/question about Moriarty in the finale. Maybe one of you might have an answer.

Was Moriarty smarter than Sherlock and Mycroft?

Mycroft had Moriarty for weeks, trying to get him to talk about his code that could unlock anything. And he didn't get doodley squat, but he gave Moriarty all kinds of info on Sherlock. You'd think with as smart as Mycroft is and with the resources he had on hand, they would have realized that the code was a load of manure.

Sherlock thought he'd figured out what the magical code was and it turned out to be nothing. He was wrong. Again, he had weeks while Moriarty was on trial to try and figure out what the code was or how Moriarty managed to do what he did and he didn't get doodley squat either.

So my first thought is that Moriarty was smarter than both of them.

Except....

Then I started thinking that this whole thing, both Mycroft and Sherlock not being able to figure it out was one big trick- a set-up to take Moriarty out for good.

They make Moriarty think that he has the upper hand by giving out the information on Sherlock, the do this whole big elaborate dance to make sure that Moriarty ends up on that roof with Sherlock, make him think he's winning the game, make him think that he's smarter than both of them because if he gets cocky enough, he's going to make a mistake and they can be rid of him. And if Sherlock has to 'die' to make this happen and protect people, he'll do it.

So what do you think?
