Laundry day...

Valerie walks down the lane, a basket on one arm, and Walker's shirt draped carefully over the other. The basket is filled with raspberries and blackberries from Miss Althea's garden--the lady had spent the previous afternoon collecting every bit of ripe fruit and had ended up with several buckets full. Valerie had asked if she could take some to the gentlemen that she worked for, and of course Miss Althea had agreed.

It feels good to be visiting her pretty men again, her spirits high with thoughts of Daniel, and her success in getting the job with the Fergusons. She hopes things are going equally well for Walker and Mellors, and wonders how the kittens are getting along with each other. She also wonders how much laundry they've managed to dirty up, and that makes her smile to herself.

She hopes they won't mind her more casual attire--it's always such a relaxed environment, so she's expecting it won't matter to them. When she woke up in the morning it was such a perfect day, the sun shining so brightly, pushing thoughts of the upcoming winter away. So she'd slipped on a white sundress, a tiny print of red and blue flowers dancing over the fabric, delicate lace trim, and a crisp white bow tied at the back. She's wearing comfortable brown buckled shoes, but she expects she might take them off once she gets to work. If she concentrates hard enough, she can almost pretend it's spring.

The fence around the cottage is in front of her before she knows it, and she puts Walker's shirt over her shoulder so she can reach with a free hand to unlatch the gate and let herself into the yard. She hopes she hasn't missed them; she knows they've been working a lot at their new house in the woods.
