I'm going to San Diego, the end of this month, to attend a conference for my Dungeon Mastering job.  I hope it's better than the last one I attended, back in, uhm, lemme think.  A while ago.  The last one was in DisneyWorld in Florida, in that huge hotel at which I marveled, as a child, every time the monorail went through it on the title sequence ( Read more... )

I hate crossing the border. I can't act natural at Customs and Immigration, because (presumably) it's too obvious that I'm trying to act natural.
i've gotten better at this, but it's still not something i enjoy. i tend to get the most hassle when i'm the most nervous. correlation/causation?

the second-best thing about being a Grad Student in this day and age is online library access
might be something to lobby your boss for at work? at least to relevant journals?

as someone tends to say to me when i head in that direction "be careful down there with all those yanks" :-)

I've gotten better at airport security and at customs. I think it's mostly a question of my feeling of entitlement (forget for a moment that I have passwords on everything and someone might ask for them, or that I have encrypted content and someone might want the keys -- I try not to think about those things while waiting in line).

I've also reached that age where, as long as I'm shaved/trimmed and my clothes look clean, I can pass for respectable. I've also only forgotten to leave the folding knife at home once and the security guy looked as shocked as I was.

White male privilege: I has it.
