So, today I have been watching Professionals parodies. I started with
The Amateurs by victorialucas38, which features clips from the show, re-edited and dubbed to (allegedly) humorous effect. Then I moved on to
The Bullshitters: Roll Out the Gunbarrel and
Detectives on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown, which appeared on UK television in 1984 and 1993, respectively. Those were quite funny (and show that fandom didn't have a monopoly on slash goggles).
What I'm wondering about, though, is the following: In the latter two parodies, the Bodie and Doyle analogs, Bonehead and Foyle, spend a good deal of time in various states of undress. Now, I don't perceive The Professionals as showing its heroes without their clothes all that much, and while Doyle does show off his manly chest in some episodes, Bodie is always notably covered up (to the point that it's frequently referenced in fanfic). So what is being parodied? Was the amount of the heroes' skin on view in Pros unusual for its time, and I simply have a different frame of reference? Or is there some other joke that I'm missing?
