Only a fortnight out of hospital, Ray was an accident waiting to happen.

Oh, to the casual observer he looks fine jogging along the mist enshrouded lane, Bodie thought as he surreptitiously watched his partner, matching the long-legged stride.

But he was close enough to hear the labored breathing, to see the thin lines of pain deepen around Ray’s eyes and mouth every time a trainer clad foot hit the brick path.

He was close enough to share the fear that ghosted their determined steps; fear that maybe this time Ray wouldn’t make it back. Together, doggedly, they ran on.

"A fine picture this is, mate. No, no, don’t say anything. You’re going to listen to me now. That had to be one of the most dim-witted things you’ve ever done! What was up with the Action Man heroics? Didn’t you trust me to have your back? Didn’t we practically take a vow to protect each other? No! Don’t say a word. It’s my turn. And don’t roll your eyes. You’re going to listen and then you’ve got some explaining to do.

"Yeah, I know, ‘Calm down,Raymond.’ Maybe you’ve got a point... but of all the daft things to do! You know I have your back so why didn’t you trust me to be there this time? Did you think I wouldn’t be there for you? You know I’m always there... except when you push me away, or shut me out. I don’t understand why you didn’t wait for me. Why did you rush in... So now you have to listen to me. Suitable punishment, yeah?

"We don’t seem to be in unison just now, Bodie. We’re making mistakes we shouldn’t be makin’. Not sure when we fell apart, or why... Did I get up your nose too many times? Did you finally get tired of taking my abuse when the world doesn’t treat me the way I think it should? I know I’m a stroppy bastard sometimes. You’re the only one that lets me get away with it. Surprised me, that did. Didn’t think you’d put up with any whinging... not your style. ‘It’s what it is, Doyle, get on with it.’ How many times did you tell me that and then let me natter on and on... no one else, Bodie... no one else.

"But I can’t let this one go, mate.

"Well, c’mon then. Here I’ve poured my heart out and you’ve got nothin’ to say? Not like you, Bodie-mate."

Leaning over, resting his forehead tightly against the bandages surrounding his partner’s head, his whispered words and warm tears fall amidst the long dark lashes spread across pale cheeks.

“Wake up, sunshine... please...”
