Universal National Service Act of 2003 - and why we should say 'no'

Sep 27, 2004 20:07

I am not normally a political person, but I thought this could not be ignored.

There are two bills currently under consideration in Congress (one in the House of Representatives, one in the Senate) to re-instate the draft as early as June 15, 2005. Click here and type in (or copy and paste) one of the following into the "Bill Number" box on the left-hand side of the screen:

HR 163
S 89

The first is the House bill; the second is the Senate bill. They are identical and less than two pages long. The age range is 18 to 26. Of particular concern is Section 10, which deals with registration of females for the selective service. This means that the only factor affecting whether someone is drafted or not is the person's age, health, and conscientious objector status. Gender and enrollment in college are no longer considered.

These bills - which have yet to be voted on, even though they were introduced almost 2 years ago- affect every single person, regardless of age. Even if you are under 18 or over 26, everyone knows or is related to someone in this age range. This bill is currently being underwritten by legislators in Hawaii, Vermont, Michigan, Florida, Texas, Missouri, Maryland... and Washington state. If you live in the 7th District (most of Seattle) and are between 18 and 26, your representative Jim McDermott is trying to conscript you into the Selective Service.

You can help prevent this bill from passing. Vote for people who will not let this pass. Click the link below to find out how to contact your Congressmen.

I encourage every single person who can to vote on November 2. I also want to say thank you to the men and women who have willingly volunteered their time, their service, and in many cases their lives in service to the United States. Do not allow this message to detract from the sacrifice they are making on our behalf.
