Worse than worst

Another work-related post.

What's worse than a workplace where everything is the absolute antithesis of a place I want to be?

A workplace where there are multiple carrots of potential fixes dangled in front of me every day, just slightly out of reach.

Case in point: My original manager (who was a temp replacement for the position but is not the temp replacement who has in turn replaced her temporarily) is, to a large degree, a no-nonsense person. She's smart, logical, doesn't like politics, and is willing to go stamp on someone's face if that face needs stamping on.

She'd be perfect to put in charge of everything at my current employer. She'd probably have the deadwood cleared and the infrastructure being repaired by the end of the first week. She would ride with the fury of a thousand storms and smite the heathen right in their in-trays.

Unfortunately, she's been pretty much categorically locked out of career advancement because the higher-ups are scared shitless of her. Plus, for some reason, they continue to prioritise making nicey-nicey with certain semi-third-party agencies who regularly crap all over us, even though theoretically we both work for the same uber-boss a couple of jumps up the line. My boss is not one to throw good attempts after bad - she would storm the barricades of the uber-boss and shake them by the neck until they brought their wayward agency into line - or at least had them conforming to the legalities they are supposed to have been (and haven't) for the past several years.

Doubly-unfortunately, the higher-up positions she'd need to be in to achieve this are politically appointed - by actual federal politicians, in some cases. They're not things she could ever achieve simply by being the best manager at her level when promotion time comes around.

This is, for many reason, exceedingly frustrating for many people.
