Have decided that poking a government department is unlikely to accomplish much, especially not in the short term.
So I've emailed the Minister for Foreign Affairs, asking for RFID chips to be ripped out of Australian passports.
A couple of technobabble and media references, playing a bit on the old National Security and Voter Appreciation strings, and a suggestion on a fast, cheap, easy way to fix it.
Rounded off with a plea not to use this massive screwup of the previous administration (the Other Party, who were big on Security and Borders and such) to beat them into a thin political pulp - I had confidence that the Minister would never stoop to such obvious popularity tactics, etc etc.
Ahem.
