I finally have my TV and MythTV system set up in my new place.
Last time I played with the system I'd managed to have myth output 4:3 (since the TV would only accept 800x600), with black bars left and right. After a fruitful discussion with R on Saturday, I now have widescreen. The PC takes 16:9 output, and compresses it to 4:3. The TV stretches the 4:3 input out to 16:9. I had to do this in three different places:
For MythTV playback, under Settings/Appearance set the monitor aspect to 16:9.
For the MythTV menu structure, it's just a matter of using a widescreen theme.
For mplayer playback, append "-monitoraspect 16:9" to the mplayer command.
Since I only have an analogue receiver, some of the shows are 16:9 letterboxed into a 4:3 transmission. This means the playback aspect ratio iscorrect, but the result doesn't occupy the whole screen (the broadcast adds letterbox top and bottom, then myth adds bars left and right). Changing Myth's playback aspect adjustment to 'fill' fixes this.
