I am soon to embark on my first adventure in machine-sewing. I hand-sew, but only little things (like the lion hood-cowl complete with ears and feathery "mane", and matching tail made on short notice for youngest nephew three nights ago!), but I have never had the patience to learn to use sewing machines or work with patterns. I just make things up

Definitely luck. :) I hand-sewed costumes for a long time until I got a machine, and it was definitely weird for a while. You'll get used to it, though, if your machine is decent.

Thanks, although it turns out I might not be sewing after all. The Captain is in a hurry with her own, and thinks it will be faster if she just zips it through, rather than teaching me. I've mostly just been cutting and pinning and making the accessories. Another time, perhaps!
