"Yes Yongguk, I got a pokémon. And no it wasn't like that time Youngnam gave me a Magikarp! I'm finally going to be able to come with you on an adventure!" Himchan's face lit up as he explained his plan to Yongguk, as if they would make it from their town to the next, as if Himchan could quite possibly walk that far and live an adventure. The thought was cute, romantic, it made Yongguk feel happy that Himchan wanted to be with him all the time but it also worried him because he knew that it wasn't going to be anything like the younger man imagined.
Having grown up with Himchan, Yongguk knew exactly what Himchan was like and if he was going to describe him and not use the word prissy or cute when he smiles, he would say clean. Yongguk smiled at the thought of being in a tent with Himchan, not because there was a small chance he might get lucky, but because it would be funny to see Himchan's reactions to the great outdoors.
It wasn’t long before Yongguk discovered that Himchan’s pokémon was a clefairy and that made him chuckle to himself, it seemed almost fitting that Himchan’s pokémon had little to know use but looked pretty cute. Yongguk wanted to get from his home town (Pallet Town) to Cerulean City, he’d heard that the gym there was now seeking challengers and he was going to get his badge. He decided to invite Himchan because of how much Himchan had made a massive thing about getting a pokémon so they could travel and be together more. That and Yongguk hated to be away from Himchan, because even though he complained, he liked the nagging and the boy was pretty to look at.
He set off, with Himchan, and Yongnam who was going with them as far as Pewter City, he had a course to attend at the pokémon school, he was trying to get into the ranger academy but needed to boost his qualifications. They set out together, all in high spirits. Once on route one Yongguk’s hand slipped to hold onto Himchan’s tightly. He loved the boy, he’d never said it but it was how he felt but there was a general unease in Pallet Town. The boys had the town pretty much divided and that stung a little. It was freer out in the big wide world, people in some cities showed a lot of PDA, some cities showed a little and it was exploring these places and finding out how different people in other cities lived that attracted Yongguk to being a pokémon trainer; well that at the thought that one day he might get to challenge the elite four and maybe become the champion.
Himchan was quiet as they had to walk through tall grass - the area where you are most likely to face a pokémon attack. Yongguk smiled giving Himchan’s hand a tight squeeze. “Nothing is going to harm you. I promise.” he whispered so Yongnam wouldn’t hear. He knew that Yongnam was sceptical of Himchan being a pokémon trainer and of the relationship between the two. He believed that Yongguk was being used by Himchan but he was learning to get over it. The longer the couple were together the more he accepted it. Yongnam kept his opinion’s away from the pair, not wanting them to feel awkward.
A wild Rattata appeared, Himchan jumped startled, and froze, hiding behind Yongguk, who just casually released his charmander. It only took one attack of ember to defeat the Rattata. They then carried on up route 1 until they came to Viridian city. Himchan was amazed, the city looked nothing like Pallet Town but somehow had a very similar feel. He followed the twins into the pokémart, where the boys purchased poké balls and potions, for the journey ahead. Himchan didn’t know what to do, he didn’t really understand this world and quite honestly he was only here because he wanted to be with Yongguk. Yongguk smiled, pressing a soft kiss to the top of Himchan’s head and then smiled at the boy. “We’re going to go into the Viridian Forest and we’ll have to spend the night there.”
Himchan spent the walk to the forest, freaking out a little about camping with Yongguk and Yongnam in the tiny tent that Himchan assumed was a one person tent that was the only one that the twins could afford. He was scared about sleeping with Yongguk for the first time, and in a tent at that. He’d never shared a bed with Yongguk before. Not to actually sleep anyway. They’d cuddled a little a few times. Himchan was very shy, plus living at home with his parents wasn’t conducive to getting with his boyfriend.
The forest was dark - which Yongguk liked, because his boyfriend held onto him a little tighter -. Himchan was somewhat intimidated and he didn’t really like bug pokémon, well actually he hated them. He clung a little to Yongguk, earning an eye-roll from Yongnam who apparently didn’t appreciate his twin being distracted from the plan.
When it came to setting up camp, the twins did most of the work - due to Yongguk insisting that Himchan just cook the food on the small propane cooker. Which Himchan did, and he did well, he was a natural cook really, but he kept that to himself. He didn’t really cook for anyone, Yongguk had never actually tasted his cooking before, Himchan sighed, he hadn’t really planned for the first time Yongguk tasted his cooking being from a propane cooking in the middle of a forest.
After they ate, all three got into the tent, dressed in their sleepwear (otherwise known as only in boxers - which caused Himchan to blush -). Yongnam took one side, where Yongguk and Himchan lay on the other, Himchan cuddled into his boyfriend, resting his head on Yongguk’s chest. They shared a quick kiss before Yongnam cleared his throat. “Can you two not, please.” Yongnam rolled to glare at them. “It’s weird to be in a tent while my identical twin is doing what ever you two are going to do!.” Himchan sighed and moved off his boyfriend, rolling his eyes as he curled up and drifted off.
Himchan woke in the night, he could hear the Weedles, Caterpies, and he swore he heard a Beedrill outside the tent and that freaked him out. He sat up and let his Clefairy out of it’s Poké Ball, smiling when it came to sit in his arms. “Oh Chilyoja, what have I gotten myself into” he said quietly. The Clefairy just looked at him. “I thought so.”
Yongguk woke up and saw how his boyfriend was, curled up, holding onto his pokémon. Yongguk’s heart broke a little, he felt bad it was his fault his boyfriend felt like this. If he hadn’t been so focused on becoming champion he wouldn’t be away so much. Yongguk sat up and wrapped his arm around Himchan, pulling the boy close to him. “I’m sorry Himchan.” he pressed a soft kiss to Himchan’s forehead. “I promise tomorrow night, It’ll just be you and I, I’m sorry about Yongnam.” Yongguk petted the Clefairy lightly. “You keep him safe tonight Chilyo, ok?”
“Chilyoja” Himchan muttered under his breath before lying down the Clefairy sitting next to him. Himchan smiled going to sleep, at Yongguk’s promise as well as being happy that he was still important to the other man.
It wasn’t long after waking up and setting off (with Chilyoja walking with them) that they arrived in Pewter City. Himchan was amazed by the sights. The city was grandiose and almost grey in colour, everything rang heavily with the theme of the gym. Everyone knew who the gym leaders were. They collected trading cards of them and watched documentaries about their lives - well other than the mysterious leader of Viridian who was away for long periods of time and said to be exploring the other lands that there were, and he apparently had a very rare pokédex and was on a mission for Professor Oak.
It was also here that the school was, the famous trainers academy where trainers were taught to hone their skills to help prepare them for varying careers to do with Pokémon. Himchan watched as Yongguk waved goodbye to his twin who was going to enroll and then live with a friend who was also in the trainer school. Himchan wondered a little if this was what Yongguk wanted to do, study to become a day care worker, or a Pokébreeder, or a ranger like his brother, or a police officer, or a gym leader, or any other job that was within the world of Pokémon.
Of course, Yongguk just smiled his usual gummy smile unaware of the feelings within his boyfriend’s mind. He just carriedo n walking emphasising that they had to get to Mount Moon before night fall, something about Zubat’s attacking or something along those lines. Himchan just accepted as they walked, in relative silence, holding hands. Himchan knew that this was not an area where this was acceptable but Yongguk didn’t appear to mind not even when another Pokémon trainer called them a name that Himchan chose not to hear.
Yongguk just carried on. “They’re all just staring because of how good we look together.” he said, Himchan nodded, pretending to believe him but he knew that wasn’t the truth. Although he had to say that they did look great together, and always had. Himchan smiled when they arrived near the entrance of Mount Moon. Chilyoja started getting excited. “Oh yeah, Clefairy’s have this affinity with Mount Moon, there are legends that there are moon stones inside the cave, hence the name. And the stones are the only things that can make Chilyo a Clefable.”
“But I like her the way she is.” Himchan said pouting a little, which only made his boyfriend laugh. Himchan pouted and picked up Chilyoja, holding her close to him, watching as Yongguk set up the tent for the night. Yongguk smiled, and Himchan sighed a little he knew what that meant. He knew that Yongguk didn’t agree with him and that he was going to drop the subject. Himchan smiled as he made dinner for them and they ate together. Yongguk pressed a soft kiss to Himchan’s lips to thank him for the food, Himchan felt his cheeks heat up a little, it was different for Yongguk to be doing displays of affection in public, it wasn’t really his thing.
That night Himchan slept in Yongguk’s arms with Chilyoja sat next to them just clapping occasionally. Himchan kept himself as close to Yongguk as he could, he was afraid again, he wasn’t too keen on Dark Pokémon and he could hear the Zubat’s flying in a flurry around the tent and it scared him. He began to think he was holding Yongguk back, he was the one who was afraid. He knew that they couldn’t go back home until they had taken on the gym at Cerulean City because that was why Yongguk had set out.
When they woke up, it was a little awkward, Himchan was acting weird, still thinking about what he’d thought about the night before, about he was unwanted, useless and just following Yongguk around. Yongguk pulled Himchan close and gave him a romantic kiss. “Channie, is something going on?” he asked softly. Himchan shook his head and then moved to rest against Yongguk’s chest. “I know you don’t like this, camping and exploring and stuff, I know you hate bug pokémon and dark pokémon and not having a working shower. But I’m really thankful that you chose to come with me. It’s been five years since we started dating and we’ve spent so much time apart because I travel and you don’t, so it really means so much to me. I really appreciate it so much.”
“I love you Yongguk.” Himchan breathed out, he didn’t know why two days of camping had taken it all out of him, he didn’t want to be here, well he did but at the same time he didn’t he hated camping, he really hated it, he hated everything about camping. But he loved everything about Yongguk and about spending time with him so it evened out.
“Now can we get going because if we can get through Mt.Moon we might be able to sleep in Cerulean City tonight, which will mean a proper bed. Natasha lives there, she hasn’t seen you in ages.” The couple got up and ate a quick breakfast before packing up and walking to the cave. “Ready?” Yongguk asked, taking Himchan’s hand. Himchan nodded and they walked into the cave, the Zubat’s fluttered around them and Himchan jumped.
They began walking through the cave trying to avoid all the other trainers and the rouge pokémon, Yongguk would normally stop and fight almost everything he could in a bid to get his pokémon to a higher level, but he knew how uncomfortable Himchan was and there was no ways he was going to force the boy to be uncomfortable longer than he had to. Yongguk knew that there was something wrong with Himchan today but he was not in a position to make it any better until they got to Cerulean City. Once there they could relax with Natasha. And then once Himchan was settled down, Yongguk could then go and challenge the gym.
Himchan was holding on tightly to his hand and although Yongguk liked that Himchan needed him it also concerned him. He worried that Himchan would stop wanting to be with him after this or that Himchan would hate him. The climbed towards the exit and then when they finally got out onto route 4 Yongguk smiled. He laughed a little at the dirt that was on Himchan’s face knowing there was probably more on his own but he’d never seen Himchan look anything than perfectly groomed. He liked this appearance for Himchan it was actually super cute, not that Himchan would think that.
Route 4 was only short as they arrived in Cerulean City just as night fell. Yongguk led Himchan through the bustling streets, once again avoiding eye-contact, he knew that his connections with his sister could only protect him so much. She might be leader of the team rocket branch in Cerulean City but that hadn’t stopped Yongnam being mugged and having his Vulpix taken off him - admittedly he did get it back, but his sister had to threaten everyone in the branch.
When they arrived at her place, she was there with a group of high ups from team rocket, “Let’s end the meeting here.” she said, before welcoming her brother and his boyfriend into the house. She gave both a hug before explaining that she had to go out and that there was risotto in the fridge for them and that they had a guest room. (which meant sharing a bed - but most people assumed that after 5 years they would be at that stage) .
That night was a lot easier on Himchan, who’d had a shower and then insisted that Yongguk had one before he’d let the older man anywhere near him. Yongguk had laughed, his Himchan was back already as if he had lost him for a while. They slept well that night, Himchan didn’t wake up at any point of the night which meant that Yongguk could sleep easy. When Yongguk woke up he felt that Himchan was not in the bed, he laughed a little and walked out to see his sister and his boyfriend cooking together. Himchan was teaching her how to makes Eggs Machiavellian.
After they’d eaten Yongguk took Himchan to the gym where he proceeded to challenge Misty, She was very quick to defeat him, leaving Yongguk somewhat down-hearteneded. Himchan was quick to offer his pokémon for assistance, using healing moves on Yongguk’s pokémon to make sure that the boy’s pokémon were ok. Yongguk quickly smiled at Himchan and gave him an electric kiss before dragging him back into the gym and asking Misty is they could challenge her as a team. “Why not I’ll only beat you both and it will be fun.”
Himchan quickly pulled Yongguk to the side and glared at him “But I don’t know how to battle.” he hissed, Yongguk smiled his gummy smile at him.
“You just heal my pokémon and I’ll do all the fighting.”
It didn’t take long for Himchan to work out how to battle, all he had to do was to tell Clefairy what he wanted her to do. He was very good at remembering all the healing moves that his pokémon had as well as his desire to impress Yongguk made him an exceptional partner.
It was down the the Starmite (Misty’s last pokémon) and Yongguk’s Ivysaur was down to only 10HP. The next hit from Starmite was going to be the last one, the battle would be over because there was no way a Clefairy with only pound could take down a Starmite. “Chilyoja use Follow Me” Himchan said quickly without thinking, and with that the attack of the Starmite was directed at the Clefairy. Himchan smiled proudly as Ivysaur landed the last hit defeating the Starmite. The couple celebrated with a quick kiss and then they laughed at each other, bouncing a little in happiness. Then they looked at Misty who handed them both a gym badge.
“You two make a good team.” she smiled.
