Notes: Spoilers for Bad Wolf/POTC S1. Nine/Rose/Jack.
Overall impression: An ambitious vid exploring the OT3 and their dissolution at the end of S1, but ultimately, it's a little unfocused in places.
Titles: The title of the vid "Alone" appears in the first seven seconds as the images of Nine, and Rose, are shown. Jack is given single shots after that. Then at the end of the vid, the credits are played to the music of Not Over by Daughtry - Overall, this technique of playing the credits to another song REALLY doesn't work for me. Not Over and Can't Take It just don't mesh as songs for one, Daughtry's vocals are jarring after listening to All-American Rejects, and quite frankly, I felt like this was two vids mashed together since images changed in the background. Maybe it would have worked if there was a moment of silence between the two songs and the credits played against a solid background. But really, I think the filler images in the vid could have been removed and the credits played to the vid's song.
Music choice: Over all, the song fit the OT3. I think the vid would have been easier to have been put to a single pairing.
Narration, Tone and Movement: Narratively, this vid was OT3ish, and more love triangle-ish. We start with Rose being sent away by Nine and the first full minute is Nine/Rose. Then we transition to Jack and Nine, with minor appearances of Rose. The song most closely fits that of Jack and his relationship as an outisder to the Rose/Nine dynamic - this bit definitely worked the best for me. It's shortly after this that the vid loses it's way again with some filler scenes before reclaiming the Jack as an outsider narrative. The tone throughout the vid is mostly wistful and wishing for something that is just out of reach. Movement wise, there are a few mis-steps. Talky face is frequent within the vid. Certain places it can be forgiven in order to get the clip required, but the number of them add up to be distracting and pulling the viewer out of the vid.
Cuts, Transitions, Effects & Colouring/Coloring: Within the vid proper itself, I didn't see any use of colouring or effects for the most part. A couple of cuts occurred with a cut to blank screen before going back to clips. The rest are direct cuts or a few fade to next image. Overall, the transitions between storylines was well done.
Specific vid & music notes:
0-0:11 - I really liked the setup of the Jack/Nine/Rose friendship. I think a few of the single shots of each character could be cut so that all three characters appear with the credits.
0:13 - A throwaway shot for the most part, although those that know the show will understand. But it doesn't strongly impact the narrative of the three.
0:17 - I really like this image of all three together.
0:18 - "You speak to me" paired with the doctor talking to the Daleks. Nice image.
0:24 - Rose alone with the Dalecks - the beginning of her separation from the doctor. "I know this will be temporary".
0:28-36 - The doctor sends Rose away
0:58 - "I watch you go" as Nine morphs to Ten.
1:04 - Jack and Nine, happy. Nice to have a break from the darkness.
1:10 - "I know that you've got something buried" -- This is where this shouldn't be described as OT3ish so much as love triangle perhaps, because in my mind, OT3 would mean that Jack isn't resentful of rose's place. Which was a big hangup for me with the vid till I reread the notes. But this is the beginning of the implication that even before Jack got left, he was resentful of Rose/Nine.
1:11-1:25 - i KNOW what the vidder is trying to do here, but this set of clips is a little muddled compared to the lyrics. It could have been a bit tighter.
1:34 - Jack saying goodbye to Rose and Nine before battling the Dalecks, but within the vid, really, him saying goodbye to both for good.
Final notes: I know the crit may seem overly harsh, and I don't mean it to be so. I really did like the vid overall, but there were just several points on which it didn't work for me. So I hope the crit is taken in stride and used to make future vids stronger.
