Church and State (of Discrimination)

Okay, what the hell is up with this whole religious/contraception insurance debate?

Why are we singling out contraception as a medication? We wouldn't deny a diabetic or someone who has high cholestrol his/her medication, so why would we deny a woman her contraception? It's pure mysogynistic bullshit disguised under a religious cover. It's discriminating against women. It's discriminating against my uterus's ability to produce a child and my desire to not produce said child.

Another issue I have with this debate is why are we giving special considerations to any religious group? So, if a religious group (or any group, for that matter) says gun control laws violate its members' rights, should they be given free access to guns? Should the gun permit, waiting period, etc be waived for members of this group? Or better yet, if a group says child labor law violates its rights, should they be allowed to ignore these laws and make 6 year olds work 18 hour days? No religious, or otherwise, group's rights should ever trump the law of the land.

Bottom line is, it is a woman's legal right to obtain contraception. If we start exempting one group of insurance providers from having to provide payment for this one type of medication, pretty soon, no insurance providers will have to pay for any medication. This sets a horrible precedence of allowing exemptions where no exemption should be given.

To be honest, I don't believe that this debate has any pertinence to religion. It has everything to do with Republican's desire to protect big business, in this case, health insurance providers, and make the democratic party (or more specifically, President Obama) look bad, so they can get contributions to their campaign. Religion just got dragged into the midst so Republicans don't have to own up to the true cause of their position and to dupe more people into supporting their mission to fatten their own pockets.
