I swear, the universe is itching to get me into an accident. In less than twelve hours, I've nearly ended up embedded in a van... twice.
Last night, ass-hat the first decided to run the red at Lincoln and Weber whilst I was coming out of the Sobeys parking lot. You know how people sometimes do that rolling stop at a red light or stop sign when making a right-hand turn. I don't like it, it's not legal, but fine - it happens. I figure when the guy's going at least 20 kph it's no longer a rolling stop. I watched him start to enter the intersection as I was, and I leaned on the horn. He actually looked at me and tried to keep going, like he thought he still had time or something. I hit the horn again and swung around him quite widely and he finally stopped dead in the middle of the lane. Fortunately it was pretty quiet out there and no one was coming the other direction on Weber so I was able to go around him.
Ass-hat the second was this morning on my way into work, and was far more serious. I was travelling up Weber (me thinks I'm noticing a theme) in the outside lane when a van pulled out of a driveway. I had just enough time to pull into the inner lane. I guess genius thought that he would just pull out of the driveway into the inner lane, and that would be ok somehow. So now I'm in the inner lane on Weber, he's in both lanes, and the only option available to me was to actually keep going around and drive on the wrong side of Weber. This was not late at night though, and traffic was somewhat heavier. Fortunately again, there was no one coming in the opposite direction. In the amount of time this occurred I didn't even have time to hit my horn.
Is it really so hard to check for oncoming traffic before pulling out onto the road?
