I very nearly wrote it in that he did "sabotage" the engine, but I figured Mal would be mad at him if he did :D

I'm sure he wouldn't want Mal too angry with him and then there's Kaylee to consider if he did it deliberately. I guess he's just an opportunist.

Yeah, but as long as it wouldn't actually damage anything and could be easily fixed, Kaylee might be persuaded to "misplace" a part, if asked for the right reasons. She'd totally think Jayne and Mal together would be sweet, I think.

It is! She's so cute about it, too, so it's not annoying, even when it might be if someone else did it.
