Summary: Mal has an unpleasant dream.

Kaylee smiled to herself as she listened to Mal mumbling away to himself in his sleep. It were one of the most adorable things about him and she loved the fact that she were the only one on board who was privy to it.

She couldn’t sleep. Her mind was too busy workin overtime on the list of parts and supplies that they would need to get next time the docked, which would be tomorrow afternoon if all went well.

Mal was still reluctant as ever to part with any money if he could help it, but now that they were bunking together, Kaylee was able to persuade him just that little bit easier now. She should probably feel bad for doin that to him, but it was his own darn fault for bein so stubborn, plus, weren’t like he didn’t enjoy himself in the process.

Turning to look at him, she noticed that he had his face screwed up in a frown, obviously havin a bad dream. Leaning down, she placed a soft kiss on his forehead and gently stroked her fingers through his hair, his frown easing away slowly. He turned his head into her palm, his eyes fluttering slightly as he begun to wake up. She hadn’t meant to wake him up, but she knew he wouldn’t be angry with her. He never was.

Slowly, his eyes opened, blinking in the dark as they tried to focus before settling on her bright smile.

“Hey,” she said quietly, continuing to stroke his hair.

“Hey,” he said back, a smile of his own floating onto his face, “It time to get up?” he asked her as he snaked his arm around her waist and pulled her close.

“No,” she told him, “You was just havin a bad dream.”

Mal froze, trying to remember what it was exactly he’d been dreaming about, “Oh yeah,” he said when he remembered, “Weren’t that bad though,” he added as he rolled on top of her.

“Sorry,” she said, “I didn’t mean to wake you.”

“Shhh bao bei. I don’t mind.”

“You don’t?”

“Hell no,” he told her, “This is way better than what I was dreaming about,” he added before leaning down and kissing gently, his hands gently caressing her body at the same time.

When he pulled away, he grinned down at her, rubbing their noses together before rolling off her again and pulling her into his arms.

Resting her head on his chest, Kaylee drew lazy circles on his stomach with her fingers before speaking again, “So what were you dreaming about?” she asked.

Mal didn’t answer straight away, but when he did it was very quiet, “St Elmo’s Fire.”

Kaylee looked up at him with a frown, “Who’s that?”

“St Elmo, he’s the patron Saint of sailors,” he explained as he sat up, turned on the lamp and padded across their bunk to his bookshelf, running his hand along the worn spines of his books before settling on the one he wanted, “But it’s also the name given to a ball of light found at the tip of some kind of metal structure, usually during a storm.”

Kaylee frowned and sat up, making room for Mal to sit beside her as he opened the book and flicked through the pages until he found what he was looking for.

“Back on the ancient seas, it was said that these balls of fire were like death omens, that when a sailor saw one, it would inevitably mean the end for the ship they were on.”

“No wonder you were frownin,” Kaylee said as she settled a hand on his knee and placed a light kiss on his shoulder.

Mal snorted, the blue ball of flame in his dream had just been at the beginning, he was surprised that all he’d done was frown and that he hadn’t shouted out and tried to grab her, stop her from falling away from him… it weren’t a dream he was keen to repeat anytime soon.

“Here it is,” he said as he stopped on the correct page, “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.”

Kaylee took the book and looked down at the poem he was pointing to and read out loud, “About, about in reel and rout, the death-fires danced at night, the water like witch’s oils, burnt green, and blue, and white.”

Although it weren’t exactly appropriate, Mal couldn’t stop the smile that came onto his face right then, the sound of her voice was so melodic that it made the most depressing of scriptures sound like bird song.

“What?” she asked.

Mal took the book off her and dropped it onto the floor before pulling her up onto his knees, “You are the most beautiful woman I have ever known.”

Kaylee blushed, unable to form a reply to that as she knew right now, she didn’t exactly look her best with her bed hair, lack of make-up and baggy t-shirt.

“I love you,” he told her, stroking her hair behind her ear.

The blush on her cheeks spread all the way down her neck, making her smile appear brighter than every before as her insides began to swell up with warmth and happiness, “I love you too,” she told him quietly.

Mal pulled her down into a deep kiss, his hands working their way down her back to her hips and thighs, caressing her gently while keeping a firm grip on her as he never ever wanted to let go of her ever again.

Turning, he settled her down on the bed again and stared down at her, his eyes so full of warmth that it were almost burning Kaylee’s skin.

Trailing her hand up his shoulders, she stroked her fingers through his hair before tracing a path down his cheek to his jaw, “I ain’t never gonna let no Elmo, his fireball or death omen take me away from you.”

Mal halted, slightly taken aback that she had realised what his dream was about, but then, this was Kaylee and she was all kinds of special. Leaning down once more, he placed the most gentle of kisses on her soft lips, “Me neither.”

THE END
