Summary: Written for dugindeep for her birthday prompt. Jensen has been working really hard and hasn't been getting enough rest cue grumpyness, Jared plans on making it better.

Jensen had a huge meeting that day, he’d been made point on the pitch and he’d been preparing for it for weeks, foregoing any sort of me time and working ‘til all hours. Jared had decided to cook him something special. He was just tasting the sauce when the front door was resolutely slammed shut and Jared nearly jumped out of his skin, getting sauce all over his nose and onto his cheek. He put the wooden spoon down, and wiped his face with the nearest dishtowel, eyes snapping shut when Jensen’s bedroom door went off next.

Jared sighed. He could probably box up most of the stuff and stick it the fridge for tomorrow. But it never tasted as good on the second day. Pissed Jensen meant that he probably wouldn’t eat anything. He certainly wouldn’t sit at a table long enough for a proper meal. Jared turned the cooker off and tossed the dish rag into the sink. He’d had a lot more riding on this dinner than simply making his best friend happy. There had been things he wanted to tell him. Things that he’d been meaning to tell him for a long while now.

He knew better than to go to Jensen, try and get him to talk. He liked his head in its current and attached position. So he grabbed a beer from the fridge and flopped down onto the couch, flipping on the tv. He’d have to wait for the food to cool down enough anyway before putting it in containers and he’d kind of lost his appetite, he’d get something later. He had hoped that Jensen would show his face at some point but he only emerged to use the bathroom. Didn’t say one word to Jared. This was bad.

Very bad.

And he hated not being able to make things better. Whenever Jared was upset Jensen always knew the exact thing to do or say to make him feel better. But when Jensen was upset he just went into himself, shut the world and Jared out. It left Jared with a nasty heavy feeling and he didn’t like it at all. Jared needed to get through to Jensen somehow. Needed to get him out of the apartment for something other than work.

There was some sort of market going on in the city centre, he was sure it was for world foods or something. It was always fun to try something new. And maybe they could go to some art house movie theatre. It wasn’t exactly Jared’s thing but Jensen used to go all the time when they were in college. Jared could possibly stay quiet for an entire showing. Maybe he could get away with listening to his ipod. Not that he could ever bring himself to be that rude.

The following morning Jared was sure to wait until Jensen had started in on his second cup of coffee before broaching the subject of going to the market on Saturday under the pretence of maybe finding some new things for him to try out for the menu of the restaurant he didn’t own yet. Jensen had grunted unintelligibly at him. Jared wasn’t a hundred percent on whether he could call that progress.

Dinner that night was better. Jared revived the dinner from the night before and Jensen seemed to like it enough that he actually carried a conversation, mundane as it was, with Jared through most of it without doing that fork stab thing and pushing things around without interest. But Jensen refused to take a glass of wine, sticking with water. Jensen hadn’t been to the gym in two weeks because of his deadline and so he wasn’t going to make it worse. Jared conceded if only because he didn’t want to throw up any more barriers.

After they’d eaten though Jensen went straight to bed. Jared went to bed too, he wasn’t in the mood for tv. It wasn’t as fun if he didn’t have Jensen to break down and pin point what was wrong with today’s society as evidenced by the best of the worst television ever. He needed him back.

On Friday night Jensen’s mood kind of went from bad to worse. His mother had set him up on yet another blind date from hell. Or that’s what Jared presumed given Jensen’s temperament when he got home early from said date, shaking his head though actually making an effort to clarify, “I don’t even want to talk about it,” before he retreated to his bedroom. It made Jared thankful that his own mother never tried to force him into a relationship.

When Saturday rolled around Jared was first up as always and Jensen was still in bed when he got back from his run. If Jensen was still in bed by the time Jared got out of his shower he'd give his best friend a poke to get him going. As much as Jensen liked his long lies he got extra pissy if he wasn't up before lunch because then it was a wasted day.

Thankfully Jared found Jensen in the kitchen, hovering at the coffee maker, when he got back out into their shared living space and Jared couldn’t help but smile at the sight of him still in his pyjamas with his bare feet and sleep mussed hair sticking up every which way at the back. Jared wanted so much to smell Jensen, to touch him and do things to him that he was pretty sure best friends weren’t supposed to want to do.

Jared grabbed himself a bowl from the cupboard and poured himself some cereal, snagging a spoon and the milk from the fridge before he sat down, “Morning Jen,” he said before having his first mouthful. Jensen of course just grunted in response. Standard. So was the moan that followed that first hit of caffeine. If Jared hadn’t tried to recreate that exact sound in his head on numerous occasions.

“So,” Jared began, “I figure that if we get out of here by half ten then we might make it before the masses descend.”

Jensen grunted again, this time something that could be interpreted as what? which Jared had anticipated, “You know to the market. We probably wouldn’t even have to go to lunch we can just pick things up as we go. Though I’d love to try out that cute little cupcake place and you can get more coffee, or maybe even dare to be adventurous and order something-…”

“No.”

Jensen said it quiet and quite resolutely as he slowly turned round, which Jared tried to ignore, “No what?”

“I’m not going out today,” Jensen said holding his conviction.

Jared wasn’t giving up so easy, “Dude c’mon you’ve barely seen the sun for like over a month now.”

“Jared I just want to relax,” he almost pleaded.

“It’ll be fun.”

“I don’t want to go to the fucking market, following you around like some sort of live action taste test guinea pig. Why do I even have to go?”

Jared had to look away from Jensen then; that stung. A lot. He sucked in his bottom lip and pushed his hands back through his hair and he got to his feet, “You know Jensen, you haven’t exactly been the greatest person to be around these last few weeks. But work’s been running you ragged, driving you nuts. I get it. I can make allowances-”

“Ja-”

Jared just held up his hand, “But you’re acting like I’m out to get you man. You’re my best friend and I love you. Why can’t you see that I just want to see you happy again? Unless I’m wrong? Maybe you don’t want to spend time with me anymore.”

“What?” and Jensen did sound quite indignantly incredulous, “Jay of course I still want to spend time with you, how could you-,” Jensen bit his lip and scrubbed his hand down his face, “I didn’t-…I don’t-…I mean I never meant-…you love me?”

Jared felt his gut drop out in that moment, "Dude shut up." he said kind of lamely in an attempt to brush it off, this was not how he wanted to declare his feelings.

"Jared?" but apparently Jensen wasn't for letting it go.

Jared’s heart started racing, blood pumping loudly in his ears, he could feel the heat creep up his face as his gut started to clench, he’d thought about telling Jensen this a hundred times over, he’d even rehearsed it a few times, but he hadn’t a clue what to say now, not when Jensen was giving him that look, “Jen I-…are you really going to make me say it?”

“Jay-…” Jensen exhaled kind of loud and he walked round the table to stand in front of Jared, “Do you love me?”

Jared licked his lips, his mouth feeling very dry, he chewed on the corner of his lip taking a steadying breath through his nose, and then dipping his head so he wouldn’t have to look Jensen in the eye said softly, “Yes.”

He closed his eyes when he felt Jensen’s hand on his shoulder and then Jensen’s finger brushed gently under his chin, tilting his head up, and he opened his eyes back up, and Jensen said the words Jared most wanted to hear, “I love you too.”
