life updates!

Aah, there's so much going on right now. Where to begin...

I have two final projects due on the 17th. The past few days I was having a panic attack over them, but after talking to Judy (my teacher) about the details, I feel much better about them. It will still be a lot of work, but it won't be nearly as insane as I thought.

The dress is for my Fashion Draping final. It's a "modern update" of a very popular dress in the late 18th century. The actual draping itself is coming along nicely; at this point my only concern is finding the right fabrics and the final construction. I can't decide if I should make the dress out of a fine cotton batiste or some floaty silk material. I'm draping this to fit the dress forms at school (as required), so it will be too small for me to ever wear. :( But still, it'll look great in a portfolio.

The coat is for my Advanced Flat Pattern final. We have permission to make final projects for ourselves instead of the dress forms, so this will fit me. I've always wanted a really smart military-style coat, and now I'll finally have one! \o/ I'm planning on either black or midnight-navy wool, and I'm undecided on either gold, silver, or brass buttons. I was really freaking out over this project because it will take more than two weeks for me to complete a tailored coat; I'm not one of those crazy Hong Kong tailors who have your 3-piece suit ready the next day, dammit. Judy says for jackets and coats she'll accept final muslin mock-ups from students because she knows it's way too much work for the class. Which is awesome by me...I'd planned to have the muslin ready for class next week to have a fitting, and get most of the coat sewn up in wool by the day of the final, even if all of the interfacing/tailoring details aren't complete. *phew*

Other stuff that's going on right now: volunteering at Lamplighters is fun times, even if I haven't spent too much time there yet. Judy's mother just died and she's currently out-of-state for the funeral; I can't do very much at the costume shop unless she's there to supervise me. I organized a few things today, measuring capes and fairy costumes and putting them in order of size, and installing some much-needed software on the costume shop computer. I should really take some pictures of the place; it's so charming with all the Victorian/Edwardian costumes hanging about and petticoats in boxes. ♥

Tonight my dad helped me plot out modes of transportation; Caltrain and SamTrans both cost the same ($8 round-trip...blegh) and will get me to approximately the same location, although SamTrans is much slower. Either way I have to walk 2-3 blocks to Lamplighters. Driving would only be about $3-4 worth of gas round-trip, except metered parking in San Francisco is beyond ridiculous. A quarter gets you five minutes. FIVE MINUTES. *rips hair out* Fortunately metered parking ends at 6pm, so if I'm ever going over there in the evening I have nothing to worry about; just drive and park. Easy as pie.

I've definitely got my work cut out for me. Only two weeks left of school and I'm DONE FOREVER. Then comes the job hunting. *falls over*
